If true, I suppose I could see them getting some additional prospects to get Archer and also clearing up the outfield log jam.

I feel like they should be able to trade Braun without having to take Kemp back.

With these two teams, have to imagine it’s a must due to luxury tax.

5-dimensional chess playing again. He's going to scare Theo into signing Bartolo Colon.

A couple days ago, but the Dbacks DFA'd Yasmany Tomas. That.....worked out well for them.

-2.4 bWAR in three seasons. Still owed $46 million.

Take another off the market after the season

The Rockies have announced an extension with outfielder Charlie Blackmon. In addition to re-working his already agreed-upon 2018 salary, the new deal will cover as many as five additional seasons.

Blackmon will be guaranteed $108MM from the start of the deal, Craig Calcaterra of NBC Sports reports (Twitter link). That includes $94MM in new money, $63MM of which comes over the three seasons that are locked in before the player options.

Though Blackmon will receive the same amount ($14MM) he was already promised for 2018, $2MM of that will now come by way of signing bonus. He’ll then earn $21MM annually from 2019 through 2021. Blackmon will consider a $21MM player option for 2022 and a $10MM option for the final season covered by the deal. That last number could escalate by up to $8MM based upon his plate appearance tally and MVP placement.

I wonder if something like this for Rizzo will happen in the next offseason or two once we decide to go over the LT. After this year he’s signed through 2021 with options at a total of $40 million (11 mil in 2019, 14.5 in 20 and 21). Maybe add 3 years and take it to around $80-100 total starting next year making him signed through 2023.

For some reason, the Nationals are calling up Juan Soto - one of the top prospects in baseball - after only 8 games at AA. The bigs will be his fourth level this year, after A, A+ and AA.

At this rate, the Cubs are going to have a top 10 system by the end of the season just because there won’t be any good prospects left in the minors.

Outside of Vlad, Soto is your best bat in the minors ahead of both Bichette and Eloy in my opinion.

Just read that Soto is the first player in the bigs who wasn’t alive during the Sosa-McGwire chase.

The Rangers have acquired lefty Michael Roth from the Cubs, according to a club announcement. He had been pitching on a minor-league deal.

Roth, 28, last appeared in the majors — quite briefly — with the Rangers back in 2016. He has thrown 36 total innings at the game’s highest level. In 29 2/3 frames this season at Triple-A, Roth owns a 3.03 ERA with 7.0 K/9 against 4.6 BB/9.

Lol Nightengale things we acquire Archer for a package "headlined" by Caratini. We make that deal yesterday if it were possible.

He also thinks we trade for Tyson Ross.

This isn’t a rumor. I’m just tossing this in here since the Cubs will probably need to acquire some relievers by the deadline as Joe is trying to kill his current crop.

This could be another thread entirely, but im confused by the rhetoric that the bullpen is getting overworked. If you look at the appearance and IP leaderboards, the only Cub showing up in like the top 50 is Cishek, and he’s 1) not all that high 2) a lower risk given the way he gets hitters out(arm slot + repertoire). I know the starters haven’t been iron men, but there isn’t much indication the pen is headed for a cliff as a result. Plus this feels like something we always worry about early and then doesn’t end up being a huge deal and/or bullpen arms aren’t super expensive deadline adds.
