So he’ll back next year, right? There’s pretty much no way Kintzler turns down the $5M player option, right?

Don’t know if that makes the trade better or worse.

I like it, depending on the prospect.

He's not flashy or exiting but gets results. The fact that he gets groundballs and soft contact really helps with our defense. Also nice that he has a low walk rate, considdering some of our other pitchers.....

This trade deadline screams "in the playoffs we're fine with the guys already on the team who will get 99% of the innings, we just need to bridge all the 4th-7th innings until then".

I'm good with that, I just hope they're right about the health of Edwards and Morrow in particular to make sure that's still true in October.

Fire Hickey. Kintzler for player-pitching coach.

Might want to hold off on that...

Yeah he only makes starters slightly worse whereas Hickey makes them a lot worse. Net positive

Report is Jhon Romero going the other way. Lots of strikeouts, but also a 23-year-old reliever in A ball.

Nice to see we are addressing our problem of too many mediocre pitchers by ... *checks notes* ... stockpiling more mediocre pitchers.

Don’t know if that makes the trade better or worse.

If he pitches well/doesn’t get hurt I’m guessing he can get a decent multi year deal. Especially because he has “closing experience.” He could probably get 3 years at $5-8 mil aav

Is this move the result of his drinking problem or because he wants to force himself to keep drinking?

Justin Wilson has a 32% K rate and a 3.10 ERA, with an ERA under 2.5 since his crummy April. He's the 5th best reliever in the pen, with none of the 4 above him being flukish. Montgomery, Chavez, and Kintzler are all worthwhile relievers to have by any definition, and they would join the 5 in a postseason pen. The Cubs don't have a shortage of good pitchers. Would it have been better to get someone better than Kintzler? Sure, I would've loved Yates, but this is also the nadir of the trade value of the farm system until the college SP start reaching AA en masse so I can understand it not being worth it when you've got a pen deep enough to shorten the game that much.

He may seem kinda crappy, but just look at his xFIP FIP velocity change away stats spin rate k/bb weak contact rate.

Think of it as a trade of Randy Rosario and Norwood for Cole Hamels and Brandon Kintzler.

Starters (4):
Lester
Yu
Hendricks
Q

Relievers (8):
Morrow
CJ
Strop
Cishek
Chavez
Monty
Wilson
Kintzler

This is a good staff for the playoffs. I suppose you could find a way to squeeze in Hamels if you really wanted to (dropping TLS or Bote, which I probably wouldn't do) or if Yu somehow isn't healthy by then. We already know what the offense is capable of, so let's just get healthy and see what happens.

That’s a great staff for the 2016 playoffs. We already won that one. It’s kinda pukey for the 2018 playoffs.

The best FIP or xFIP among that projected playoff rotation is 3.94. If that was happening to a rival we would be all over it.

Soft contact and low ground ball rate, so he's the anti-Hamels

Yeah its a bit of a gamble but I don't think the Cubs could have gotten a difference making starter without having to trade Happ/Russell/etc. They didn't want to so instead pivoted to having the best and deepest offense combined with a very deep bullpen that can hold the fort down if the starters can't get it together. Also, the starters getting it together is still a legit possibility when you consider their track records, age and in the case of Darvish return from injury. I think its a smart play albeit not completely ideal.

not striking anybody out and giving up soft contact for an elite defense is the new market inefficiency

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

Yeah, I understand that we used up all our resources on guys who ended up being meh like Quintana and Darvish so we are just kind of stuck with it. Still sucks today though.
