Well I hope he bails after one year.

Or even better, signs a big contract and becomes a Heywardian albatross. Without the championship-winning locker room speech, obvs.

That seems light for him.

Don't like this trade because Goldschmidt kills us and we own Weaver. Sure would be nice to have an extra draft pick to trade because "reasons."

So one year of Goldy for a potential No. 3 starter, a starting catcher and David Bote clone? Seems light no?

It does. Weaver’s ~10 starts in 2017 seemed to trick everyone that he’s actually good and not just a back of the rotation, cheap version of Mike Leake starter.

Hopefully the offseason salsa regimen improves his shoulder strength because his arm at 3B doesn’t play.

Don’t like Goldschmidt in the the division. Do like Carpenter playing 3rd. base.

FWIW Goldschmidt is only project by steamer to be .010 points better by wOBA and 10 points better than what José Martinez gave the Cardinals last year and I’m assuming that Martinez is going to be out now.

Do they expect Yadier Molina to catch into his early 50s?

I had forgotten about Martinez, that dude can hit. I'd probably play him over Fowler in RF.

88 wins, I suppose. NL Central will be tough again.

Goldschmidt is awesome, so that's objectively bad news. Silver linings:

- Carpenter was a 5 win 1B last year and between likely offensive regression and the fact that he can't throw a ball 100 feet, I'm not sure 2019 Goldschmidt/Carpenter at the corners is more than a win or so better than 2018 Carpenter/Gyorko

- The benefit is almost certainly consolidated in 2019, because they either lose him or they extend a 32 year old first baseman, which is a universally terrible idea.

- I don't rate Weaver that highly, but the strength of the St. Louis rotation is depth more than star power so they're definitely borrowing from that here.

Jose Martinez is the most uncomfortable looking first baseman I've ever seen.

Oh he’s horsefeathering awful there and should be a DH somewhere. Goldschmidt definitely gives them a defensive bump at 1B but the defensive gain on him over Martinez might be negated by moving Carpenter to 3B over Gyorko/FA though. The offensive upgrade on Goldschmidt vs Martinez could be relatively nominal, was my main point.

Brutal.

Martinez parlayed all that raking into 1.5 WAR. Goldschmidt was 5.4.

Not that Goldy would have a place on the Cubs, but did the Cards basically snag him for Mike Montgomery, Taylor Davis, and Giosker Amaya?

Getting tired of seeing the division rivals kinda fleecing other teams for kick ass players, meanwhile the Cubs basically have a bag of rocks and some old porn they found in the woods as trade assets.

Comparing Carson Kelly to Taylor Davis is silly. Kelly is a top prospect and was the heir apparent to Yadier Molina. Taylor Davis is a guy we only know about because he awkwardly stared at a camera as a bit.
