Cubs sign Xavier Cedeno

Postby Cubswin11 » Thu Feb 14, 2019 1:52 am

Good loogy, means Duensing is likely gone. So yay for moves making us better!

Edit:

Minor league deal it appears, so there’s an open 40-man spot currently

A pure LOOGY, a dying breed. And judging by his precipitous velocity dropoff the past three seasons, possibly a dying arm too.

The pitching plan seems to be to bore lineups into submission

These guys talked about power pitching way back when they were hired...This year’s pitching seems less that than ever even if Darvish ends up good to go

Don’t think he had a velo drop last year? He went from throwing a 4-seam FB to a cutter and that historically for him has been 2-3 mph below the 4-seam and he was around his career average on velo with the cutter and curve last year (he’s literally a 2 pitch, pitcher with the cutter and curve now he threw them 99% of the time last year). Also his cutter is pretty good.

The velocity drop is like for like, not a function of the fact that he dropped the four seamer. Cutter velocity:

2014: 90.2
2016: 88.2
2018: 86.6

Missed that. I didn’t look back 4 years. I guess at least the Cutter was elite last year. Which is promising. He seems fine as a loogy if he’s treated as such. Joe will probably give him a chance to close out a game in early April though vs only RHB and it will go to horsefeathers.

Sounds like he’s either on his way back up (for Randy I’d suspect) or has been cut

Did they, though? I wouldn't be surprised if they did, but I don't recall that being one of their big talking points early on.

Yeah I don’t remember that at all and their actions certainly haven’t really backed it.

They did, mostly McLeod IIRC. I don't know how big a talking point pitching has ever been beyond "we need more of it" but yeah, it's been talked about

A list of their biggest pitching moves includes prime Lester, Darvish, Kimbrel, Arrieta, Strop, trading for Chapman, healthy Morrow, took the hardest throwing college SP in the draft, used a couple more firsts on a then hard throwing lefty and a guy with 400 Ks in the SEC...You can argue that it hasn't gone particularly well and/or developed fast enough, hi pitching, but there's plenty of actions especially since those first 4 drafts spent gathering bats
