Not saying it will happen, but the Cubs coming back from a 3-1 deficit to win the World Series does seem like the appropriate way to cap off this season and make the 30-for-30 even better.

No matter what Hendricks does going forward, i think we can all agree he deserves this for what he's done so far.

Kyle's one of my favorite guys on the team, so I'm happy for him that he's getting paid, but I don't love this deal on paper. The idea of guaranteeing money to a guy still two years from FA who already only throws 87-88 seems unwise. We already saw in the first half of 2017 what it looks like when he loses a little bit more velo. What happens when it leaves and doesn't come back?

That can't be right about the option... the only way a 2024 option vests is by Cy Young voting in 2020?

After the most dominating pennant clincher in history plus being the shoulda-been-winning-pitcher in Game 7 of the World Series, yeah, he can have whatever he wants.

2020 would be his pre-free agency world. If he were to have had a CY caliber season that year he'd sign an enormous deal. This contract takes away a lot of the upside. So part of the structure gives him back a little of that upside if he does well.

From what I can tell, top 3 finish in 2020 Cy Young guarantees the 2024 option. If he doesn't finish top 3, it becomes a team option. Given that he's about the least flashy pitcher in baseball (like when he put up a 2.13 ERA and still finished behind Lester), I think it's pretty safe it'll just be a team option.

I have the same fear. Hi is my favourite pitcher on the team by far, but his long term projection scares me since he has so little room for regression in his velocity.

With that said, I absolutely see the need to lock him up for awhile. Lester and Hamels are both toward the end and Quintana and Darvish are both question marks, so this helps stabilize a portion of the rotation for the foreseeable future.

Even if Hendricks regresses somewhat, the numbers in this deal don't look bad for a middle of the rotation starter. I'm just glad the Cubs finally did "something."

The Cubs MRI machine is just a bunch of old oil drums taped together and Gryzlo shining a laser pointer around

Yeah not really a deal we had to do and he probably doesn’t get much more in FA. But whatever, it’s not that much money that should handcuff us. I think he’ll age fairly well barring an injury.
