Apologies in advance but...My "resign Castelanos" offseason:

Extend: Castellanos (5/115), extend Bryant (15/450 or something hilarious) - I figure only extend Castellanos off a WS, so what better time to do Bryant

Trades:

Cubs get: Patrick Weigel RHSP, CF Drew Waters, RHSP Kyle Wright
Braves get: Jason Heyward OF, Jose Quintana LHSP, Willson Contreras C

Cubs get: Cesar Hernandez 2B
Phillies get: Albert Almora CF, Chatwood RHSP - Think the Phillies may shop for a CF with Herrera's DV situauon

Cubs get: Jackie Bradley Jr. CF, Darwinzon Hernandez LHRP
Red Sox get: David Bote IF

FAs:

PickyourfavoritecheapveteranC
Roark
Wacha
Thornburg
Cingrani
Prado or some older IF bat

C: Cheapglove/Caratini
1B: Rizzo
2B: Hernandez/Hoerner
SS: Baez/Hoerner
3B: Bryant/Prado/Hoerner

OF: Castellanos, Bradley Jr., Schwarber, Happ, Hoerner

Hendricks
Lester
Darvish
Wacha
Roark
Mills
Weigel
Wright

Kimbrel
Hernandez
Wick
Ryan
Cingrani
Thornburg
Mills
Weigel
Wright

The likely outcome is that bullpen is going to be, yet again, a nightmare at the best of times, and the starting rotation is all but a lock to be worse than it is this year due to age, likely injury and lack of money. Holy horsefeathers, did these guys drop the horsefeathering ball on pitching post-2016.

What if I added AJ Minter and Nick Pivetta to the Braves and Phillies trades? THEN we're rolling? Hard to see how that could crumble immediately

Packing the bullpen with guys who started more recently but mostly sucked in front of more straight up relievers like Wick and Kimbrel might be a way to protect both the aging SPs and those relievers. Could break in a new SP this way, shift the BoR guys to the bullpen, call up deeper from AAA depth...I also think Darvish could continue to be a beast depending on how he finishes, which should take the load off Hendricks a little bit up top

BTW that's one of my problems with extending Castellanos: it really restricts what they can do - it's basically doubling down on the core + Castellanos - if they can't get extremely lucky and dump some contracts. I don't think it's impossible but

---

On PCP's: I like Bundy for the five spot, not a high ceiling long term piece but good for the extending Castellanos window thing. Givens is the kind of established reliever they can use, some closing experience but not married to the role. Overall though I think the offseason plays it too safe/conservative

Who the horsefeathers would seriously want to sign KB to a 15 year anything?

When Bryce Harper went to Philly, I had the random thought that KB would be joining him when he reached FA. Why not start that move this off season? Trade KB for Nola & Hernandez & Pivetta/Irvin. Keep Castellanos and sign Rendon.

I do think there's something there with the Phillies. They need pitching badly and have expendable position players. I really do think a Chatwood for Hernandez deal makes sense with others involved. Pivetta wasn't that good this year. I'd rather have Eflin if any of them but I don't think they give up on him just yet. Could probably add Almora to the deal too. Maybe see if we can help them get out of Robertson's contract if we think he'll be healthy.

it's weird because as disastrous as this season was, i actually feel better about the cubs going forward than i did last offseason. a lot of the most important players with question marks bounced back this season. contreras, bryant, rizzo, darvish, and schwarber all had years that signficantly boosted the outlooks of their futures. they are all a year older and all have a year less control, but i am waaaaayyyyyy more optimistic of that group (and their current trade value) than i was 6 months ago.

the core is dysfunctional as hell and needs to be broken up or changed around, but the talent and value players is still there. if i had faith in theo (i don't know if i do), i'd be confident that we have enough talent and resources to go back to winning 90+ games just by switching things around.

I feel a little of this too. Even Heyward had a pretty good year outside of the leadoff/Joe stuff.

Starting pitching is still a huge question mark. Have to replace Hamels now and Q/Lester next year. Maybe even sooner, those guys all struggled this year. Theo needs to fix the rotation now and I'm not sure he can.

Why would we trade 2 years of Bryant for one of Betts?

Yeah, that doesn’t make much sense. Mookie also will make $7-10 mil more than KB in arbitration this year

I would for sure be down with getting Betts, but also more, for the extra year of Bryant.

Not saying it will happen, but the Cubs coming back from a 3-1 deficit to win the World Series does seem like the appropriate way to cap off this season and make the 30-for-30 even better.

I don't want to be annoying so I promise I won't say this every time it comes up, but every proposal that includes trading Bryant I have to scream into a pillow to avoid deleting out of spite. It is a bad idea and you should feel bad for considering it, you very bad people you.

I agree. I just think about Bryant on the 2002 Cubs, or the 2010 Cubs or the 2013 Cubs and laugh about how differently he would be perceived. We've become pretty spoiled.

He's forever trapped in the Dead Zone of technically being too valuable to trade, but he's doomed to not actually be as great as the Cubs desperately need him to be.

Also: his skeleton is an antique.
