This is an exciting turn from last year, when literally nothing happened between Corbin signing and spring training

$9 mil guaranteed for Gausman, you have to think Q is relatively easily moveable if we have to cut payroll and we could get at least a pen arm or like a fringe top 100 prospect.

I think there are implications for Chatwood as well. I'd rather have Gausman than Chatwood, but it's not a total slam dunk. Especially since we've seen teams pay out the nose for spin and velocity with guys like Pomeranz, I wonder if this is a sign that Chatwood is not *that* far underwater contractually.

I think we’d still have to give up a Tyson Miller, Abbott, Short type at the least in a deal if we’re moving him and not throwing in more that $1-2 mil, at minimum. Maybe a Roederer or Strumpf on the high side (I’d pass at that). The Angels just had to give up the 15 overall pick last year to move Cozart, who’s probably worse/more broken than Chatwood. But yeah I think Chatwood is at least moveable for not a crazy prospect if we maybe eat 1/3-1/2 the deal, all of it could have some pain.

I've got no issues pairing last year's first round pick with Chatwood or better yet Heyward. Probably takes multiple prospects to trade Heyward but last year's first round pick probably goes a long way. Maybe something like Heyward, 2019 first, and two from Thompson/Franklin/Cruz/Rodriguez/Little/Uelmen/de la Cruz/Patterson? Get it done Theo!

If they could move Heyward and even 80-90% of his money for Strumpf and 2 of those guys I think it would already be done.

Longtime major league outfielder Adam Jones’ time in the bigs may have just drawn to a close. Jones announced on Twitter that he’s signing with Japan’s Orix Buffaloes. He inked a two-year, $8MM contract with a club option for 2022, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. The deal could max out at $15.5MM if Jones’ option is exercised and he earns the $2MM in incentives that are part of the pact.

That's surprising.

Why? He’s only controlled for 2 more years and never cracked 1 WAR. He’s a bad defender, doesn’t have a ton of power or walk or hit for average.

Not that it matters now, but he's only 24 and I think there's more there with the bat. With that said, Eloy and Mazara OF, that's going to be fun.

Cole already back on the market?

With Cole, Strasburg, and Grandal all signed should finally see the Cubs make some trades...Jeff Hoffman? Kyle Wright? Chris Archer, Marte, and Frazier? Riveting times ahead

My post from Oct. suggested trading Contreras, Almora, Short, and Underwood to Pittsburgh for Marte, Frazier, and Kela. Solves CF, 2B, and one bullpen spot. Finding a taker for Chatwood would pretty much cover the money issue.

That's funny, right there.

All this talk of contending teams trying to free up payroll in a "sport with no salary cap" is silly, though. The luxury tax is effectively a salary cap, and its obvious that teams are treating it as one over the past few years. Why do we so easliy accept a salary cap in other sports, but in baseball the mention of it is unforgivable?

Boooooooo all salary caps

------

Nothing against JT Realmuto, easy second, but Grandal should be the first team All Pro catcher

In an alternate world where things were fun and good, I would be seeing that 'Astros might trade Correa to cut costs' news and instantly calling them about George Springer. Talk about someone who would solve like 8 different issues for our team, both real and meatball-y.

I'm still on team "Let's go all in for 2020 and 2021 and deal with the fall out after", if you couldn't tell.

The article says they're considering trading Correa so that they can extend Springer...

Salary caps are [expletive]. That said, if the owners are going to treat the luxury tax threshold as a salary cap - which is collusion and illegal, but that's never going to be proven - then fine, institute a salary cap, but it damn well better come with a high salary floor like every other sport's does.

There was that report last year that part of the reason we sat out Bryce/Manny was because we loved Arenado (who was suppose to be a FA this year) and he was our real target over the two years of the big time FA. Probably a PR spin to explain not spending last year. It would take a ton of moving parts and is more fantasy message board talk but would be fun to trade for him after a KB deal if were gonna do the KB thing.

Freidman's bravery and creativity knows no bounds, he appears to be making a patented "strong push" for Lindor...We'll see if Lindor can pass the tests and be worthy of breaking an Andrew Freidman built roster. As a pre-FA guy Lindor may have more of a shot than most to please Freidman so this interest may be as close to legit as allowed

In any other case but Friedman I'd imagine most other team president or GM would be like "oh no please don't take Gavin Lux and Dustin May for Francisco Lindor" with obvious heavy sarcasm. In this case probably dead serious
