So the Cubs got Craig Kimbrel for a million and change more a year than Will Smith? Nice

Sadly, I never really figured we were a realistic option since I'm sure he wants to close. That Atlanta bullpen has gone from a real weakness to very solid since the trade deadline.

Smith is solid, but I wasn’t interested in him for the draft pick and contract he’d go for so this is no real lost opportunity for us, imo. But is the pen really all that solid? Jackson is shakey, Melancon and Greene suck. It’s also really expensive. Smith/Melancon/Greene are gonna cost almost $45 mil this year combined. A little better planning and they could’ve been in on Cole, Strasburg or Rendon for that.

Yeah assuming he can get back to like 85-90% of his former self this makes the Kimbrel deal look a lot better for only a few mil more and no draft pick.

Kimbrel had the absolute worst season for a Cubs reliever in recent memory

I like this, one of the top 10-15 free agents signed basically the moment that "real" FA opened up for basically exactly what he was worth. More of this please.

If the worst 20.2 innings of his career was part of the cost of having Kimbrel on the 2020 roster then I'm already over it. I don't even want to imagine what this bullpen looks like without on him locked up. Hell, with the way teams shop in FA right now he might have had a bigger market this year than last if available
