Re: Contreras Being “Extensively” Shopped
This is the most pathetic [expletive] thing I've ever witnessed.

I mean, after 35 year old pitcher, 28 year old catcher is the next logical piece to trade in a blow up right?
What's Contreras arbitration/FA situation the next couple years?

Re: Contreras Being “Extensively” Shopped
So what low end teenage prospects are available? If the Darvish trade was the best Hoyer could do with a player at his highest trade value, just think what he could do with Contreras. Years from now, when the Cubs are in the midst of losing 95+ games every season and Hoyer is long gone, one of these lotto tickets will have developed in a good major league player. People will then praise Hoyer for his eye for young talent in all his trades.

Chicago might as well be renamed "Eternal Sports Purgatory" from now, on, because none of this horsefeathers is changing any time soon.
And yeah, I see you, White Sox fans. You guys are doomed, too.

Doooo it doooo it, bring back more bats
I was very pro trading Contreras before this, so I'm definitely not going to be 100% against trading him just because they traded a pitcher. Hell, bring on Amaya 2021 if they trade him

Controlled for two more years. Probably owed in the $18 mil range total.

To be fair, we got reasonably high-end teenage prospects in the first deal.

not sure if you were meaning to imply otherwise, but willson's value shouldn't exactly be at a low point right now. weird 2020 stuff aside, he improved drastically defensively (in ways that look like they'll stick) and he wasn't bad offensively.

Tbf, that's not crazy far from what the people have been demanding for years now (though 18-20 is likely a little young for the league's agenda, don't want to undermine the NCAA!). I think it's pretty cool the Cubs have a couple guys you can squint and see making a ML debut at 20 (Howard, Preciado)

Re: Contreras Being “Extensively” Shopped
I'd be mad if they weren't shopping him. Thry aren't going to be competitive so get what you can for the rebuild, the same goes for Bryant,Hendricks,Baez and Rizzo. The absolute worst thing you could do is put together a middling team hoping to 84 win yourself into the playoffs all the while wasting the remaining trade value.

Play all of the 18-20 year olds.
We'll have to when every team below AA is dissolved

No, definitely meant Contreras value is high just don't trust Hoyer, in light of the Darvish trade, will be able to get that back.

No, we'll just lose them to some other team in the draft.

Nobody was demanding that in the last 5 years. You must be getting paid by Ricketts to post all of this positive spin about this trade. As for squinting, I think most of us will have our eyes completely shut for the next few years. As for Contreras being shopped, somebody ought to tell Jed that Campusano wasn't part of the Darvish deal.

Howard turns 20 in 8 months and hasn’t played even a single minor league inning, he’s probably 3 years away in the most optimistic/fast track outlook. What the horsefeathers are you talking about being up this year?

Howard's birthday is 1/29/2002, someone goofed I fell for it too. I would disagree that the *most* optimistic/fast track is 3 years. The *most* would be opening in full season season ball 2021 and then opening AA at 20 in 2022, setting up an in-season debut should things keep going great. This org pushed Kyle Schwarber and Nico Hoerner through to the MLs in their first full pro seasons and those guys aren't Ed Howard, who Kantrovitz called as advanced as many college players as far as having a pro level routine
Actually, I can even top that optimistic route:
- Howard comes in at 6'3" 195 (or can be listed as such without too much fudging, so today probably)
- Opens 2021 in SB instead of MB
- Mashes
- Makes a September debut
- Starts 2022 at SS for the Chicago Cubs. I'll call that the Justin Verlander HOF track
The baseline for shrinking the minors isn't so that top players spend *more* time down there, or at least that's how I'm looking at it
Backtobanks wrote:Nobody was demanding that in the last 5 years.
Ha! Tell that to Kris Bryant, cursed with being 30(GASP!!) when he hits FA. The obsession is so intense and vitriolic that this nice guy just trying to play winning baseball and start a family had to make some insane video cursing at the fanbase of the team he plays for, won a WS for even(!), to demonstrate how much he doesn't care. Collectively, baseball fans lost their gd minds over age, control, and salary in the 2010s, see trees no forest to the benefit of people like the Ricketts
