Padres trade for Joe Musgrove
Padres trade for Joe Musgrove
Musgrove was one of only 3 players on the Pirates to project north of 2 WAR. Also kind of have to wonder if Dinelson Lamer is still hurt.

I've already seen Hudson Head mentioned, who would be better than anyone the Cubs got for Yu. I'm gonna be angry again when I see this return.

Re: Padres trade for Joe Musgrove
I like the the Mets pulling from the Dodgers' playbook and sneaking into a trade to make a pretty clever pickup. Lucchesi's a good add to a rotation that already has DeGrom, Stroman, Carrasco, and Peterson, plus has two option years remaining. The prospect they gave up has potential, switch hitting catcher Endy Rodriguez, but was also a distant second best teenage catching prospect with Alvarez there
I like the Padres' side of the Musgrove deal. He adds a healthy arm to a rotation with multiple TJs, including one with 142 combined innings in 2019-2020 (166 including MiLs), looking to make the leap from 60 to hopefully 162. Like Snell there might be some room to get better just by leaving an org with higher goals than trading him
The Pirates didn't get a bad return, but it's boring. Head's the SNT version of Roederer, strong Rk league debut at 18 and starting CF tools from a L/L OFer but without the 400+ solid PAs Roederer took at 19 in full season ball. Fellows and Bednar are relievers all the way, Bednar in particular has some really good stuff and solid performance as a MiL reliever. Cruz has SP potential but barring an unforeseeable jump in stuff is more in the mold of Ryan Yarbrough who'll get nickel and dimed over not being perceived/marketed as an Impact player

Honestly don't see why anyone in the NL Central should try to do anything if MLB is gonna keep the dumb expanded playoffs. The fanbase is gonna celebrate "playoffs!" no matter how they get there, just have to look at the Bears.

Yep. Do it with a lower payroll and they'll be back in both the league's and the fans' good graces too

Re: Padres trade for Joe Musgrove
I'm still holding out for the hope that we play the same kind of schedule as last year. We might still look pretty good against the NL Central and AL Central teams with the exception of the Twins and WS. If we have to play against "real" ML teams, it's going to be pretty ugly.

Feels like the Pirates got a better return for Musgrove than they did for Cole, no?
Also Padres gave up a lot for a No. 3-4 starter, unless they think Lucchesi is broken.

Nah, Musgrove is a way better with a high ceiling in general. Lucchesi's competent enough and will help the Mets fill innings during the regular season, but if they make the playoffs he's not starting. The Padres have way more interesting lefties down their depth chart with Morejon and Gore

In the sense that a 90 MPH BOR starter with weak offspeeds and a shallower repertoire like Lucchesi is meat come October
