They figured if they are gonna go back to 2013 they may as well load up on everyone's 2013 wish list. Bold.

Re: Cubs Sign Austin Romine
Romine put up acceptable backup-catcher numbers in 2018 and '19 and was graded as good on defense. He put up DFA-worthy numbers on both sides of the plate last year.

Re: Cubs Sign Austin Romine
Last year he was a disaster, but the two years before that he was a solid 2nd division starter type with the Yankees.

was probably a tough sell convincing ricketts that no, they couldn't actually just go with one catcher this season.

Whoa! Where did they find the money? Maybe they found a few more data analysts to let go.

This is the type of catcher I figured they’d eventually sign.
Now, need about five more Big League players to fill out the roster.

Re: Cubs Sign Austin Romine
We can joke about this but it's a fine move. He's been a decent backup in the past and it's not much money. If we trade Wily and Romine gets 300 at bats then it's a problem.

Re: Cubs Sign Austin Romine
I would think this is another action that doesn't suggest a tank. Romine's a good backup catcher as those go and not really someone to sign if expecting to trade the starter like Castro might have been

Or it lets them wait to see if the catching market develops in the regular season to flip romine or contreras without having to throw Amaya to the wolves. Ie our entire strategy from 2011-2014

They could trade Amaya for a couple of 18 year olds to keep within their timeline.
