He is the best non-MLB talent on the planet at 21. Currently he is working on his third season as one of the tippy top best pitchers in the NPB. On top of that he's OPS'ing over 1.000 this year, hitting .300, and already has 5 HRs. Pure power pitcher in the mold of a Clemens or Schilling, built like them too rather than tall and thin lik Darkish, with his two primary pitches being fastball/splitter. Doesn't get cute like so many NPB pitchers with the offspeeds, supremely confident in his fastball...Oh and he's been kind of babied as a pitcher, especially for an NPB pitcher (SPs pitch once a week there).

He's the kid who wanted to come to America out of HS and almost signed with the Dodgers. I've kind of assumed the Cubs have had him reserved since that didn't go down. The narrative I run with is that the Cubs, a flagship franchise for the MLB, have never gotten a Japanese superstar and are not the global presence that the Yankees and Dodgers. He would be the guy who establishes the Cubs as a global baseball "power," or at least that would be the hope. He's already a baseball icon in Japan, maybe more popular than Darvish was, and is known as someone who wants the spotlight. That he wants the MLB to consider him seriously as both a SP and hitter, or no dice, should hint at the kind of makeup and personality we're talking about here.

Sign him for the rest of his life, then the game switches to the DH for the NL within a couple years and the Cubs are all, "bro, I don't know what happened, this is some bull horsefeathers!" while secretly high-fiving behind his back.

There's plenty of Ohtani porn on Youtube. Someone or another has thrown complete starts going back years. They're fun to watch.

Here's his outing against the MLB....travel team? I forget wtf they were called and it doesn't matter:

Thanks for the info and the video Tom. He's probably a long shot but who knows.

I wouldn't call it a long shot (as much as you could call a free agent signing not a long shot). If the hitting thing is serious, it's probably like us, the Dodgers, maybe Giants or Mets, and a random mystery team or two (like maybe the Cardinals decide to finally spend their TV money).

Out of those teams, the main one I'd be worried about losing to individually is LA.

Yeah the whole LA signs all the major international free agents thing is what I mean by a long shot. It seems like we usually miss out on the big international guys especially when it comes to the Japanese guys. Anything could happen though, we should have tv money coming maybe that will play into their willingness to pony up the money.

No one is going to let him play a position when he's not pitching if he's a starter. I could see a team get creative and use him as fireman (close and late) while using him as a position player.

Is he a good defensive player, what position?

My thoughts exactly, and I only worry about the others out of an obligation to pretend other teams are keeping up with the Cubs these days.

Well it's the perfect time for the Cubs to be the biggest story in baseball. Why wouldn't he want to come here?

What's the earliest reasonable timeframe he'd be posted/come over here? I thought 2020ish was the earliest

Under the current system the earliest was something 2021 or 2022. I've been thinking 2018-2019 for some time now on the optimistic end, if things work out well enough. The current posting system can be renegotiated as early as this offseason. I would think someone representing him would love for him to be in this FA class.

Funny that the hardest throwing SP in NPB history is making more headlines for his bat this year (.322/.388/.729). He is tied for the NPB lead in strikeouts as a pitcher with 58 and is 3rd in HRs as a hitter with 7. This young man can have all the money required to make it happen.

The Japan Times wrote:SENDAI – Slugging ace pitcher Shohei Otani had three hits, while allowing a run in seven innings for the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters in a 12-3 whipping of the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in the Pacific League on Sunday afternoon.

Getting a jump on the interleague season which starts Tuesday, the Fighters opted to go without a designated hitter, so Otani, who typically fills the role a few times a week between starts, could bat sixth. Otani went 3-for-5 with a double, an RBI and two runs.

At packed Kobo Stadium, Otani (3-4) allowed four hits and two walks, while striking out six en route to winning his second straight start.

“I didn’t have a good tempo to start with, but the fielders making the plays behind me and scoring for me helped me find my rhythm,” said Otani, who extended his hitting streak to 11 games and raised his batting average on the season to .359.

Otani's been busy:

- He reset the fastest recorded pitch in Japanese baseball history by hitting 163 kph (~101.3 mph).
- He has a 17 game hitting streak.
