Heyman has a blurb on remaining FA and mentions us and the A's are interested in him. Solid reliever, I'd be OK with him on a one year deal. Probably a guy we trade midseason, even if we didn't get a ton in return.

He just wants to play for us because it's a shorter sprint to the mound.

I like how he's listed at 6'4" and 240 lbs. If he's 240, I'm 160.

Rosenthal just mentioned we were in on Qualls umtil he signed with the Phils, so we probably do have an interest in Coffey.

We've already signed enough veteran relievers we don't need. The only way this season will be somewhat palatable is if we get a chance to see as many of the young guys as possible. Enough of the scrap heap unless we're talking 26-28 year old reclamation projects.

I'm generally in favor of getting the kids acclimated to the big leagues, but since they are already punting this season I think you might as well fill out your bullpen with some veteran help instead of wasting cheap years for bullpen roles. It's not like the Cubs are loaded with arms that need to pitch in the bigs today. Plus, the veterans can be turned around in trade in July if all goes well. As long as you stay away from big money or multiple years, there's nothing wrong with guys like this.

They don't NEED to, but should. We already have Marmol, Samardzjia, and Wood as far as sure things to make the team. I guess Russell's close to that. Aside from them, there's Carpenter, Dolis, Mateo, and Gaub who already have their clocks ticking and should be on the team. That's a more than full pen right there. I know it's always good to have backups, but we also have Weathers, who I think I'm the only one intrigued by, Castillo who will need to either make the team or work out a deal to keep if we want him and then there's Corpas, Sonnenstine, Maine and now Miller. Let's not forget that we have 6 starters. Beliveau is also on the 40 man and could be called up at some point. I'd say we don't need any relievers, again unless it's youngish reclemation.

Looks like the Cubs are interested after all. I'm fine with a 1 year deal here. Makes sense and to be perfectly honest, it's nice to know there's going to be some pitching depth after the nightmare that was 2011.

It's almost as if there isn't a misc FA thread for all this BS.

Seems like going after guys like Qualls and Coffey is as much about crossing their fingers that they can deal them midseason as it is about, like, using them in the pen.

Does this thread's existence actually bother you?

Anything regarding a player potentially on the cubs 25 man roster should be worthy of its own thread. The last thread on page 1 hasn't been posted in for two weeks, we'll live.

So Jason Jaramillo, Trever Miller, Matt Tolbert, Alfredo Amezaga, Joe Mather, Edger Gonzalez, and Bobby Scales each should have had their own thread? They could all potentially be on the 25 man roster.

I agree to the extent that there could be a seperate thread for minor transactions and potential signings for the Cubs seperate from the misc. thread, but each doesn't need it's own thread, which would ultimately end up with the same discussion each time.

Jason Jaramillo had 4 of his own threads. In fact, I may go make a 5th.

Agreed. Not that this will apply to Coffey, but what's the problem with bringing in fringe guys on MiL contracts with ST invites? If they work out, they are cheap, only around for a year and do the bolded above. If they don't work out, in most cases they are probably released outright by the end of ST and the guys they hang on to are filler in AAA, available if injuries happen and cheap and only around for a year.

It may not be a win/win, but it's far from a loss or a waste.

There's nothing more demoralizing than the BP blowing a lead. While they may not be terribly successful at it, the 2012 Cubs are still going to at least try to win games. More middle relief options helps tha cause. There will be plenty of time to try out the kids later in the season.

Also, with Jim Hendry gone, it'd be nice to have someone else to provide us with material for fat jokes.

Yeah.

That or make a minor cub's move thread instead of throwing them in with the rest of the league.

He's still around, just not posting as much. Real life concerns have taken him away from the site for a bit.
