Cubs 2012-2013 Offseason Moves

Postby bukie » Fri Oct 26, 2012 3:08 pm

I thought it would be good to have a thread that consisted strictly of actual moves. No speculation, no discussion, just moves. Threads on discussion of significant moves can still exist, but everyone could know that if this thread got updated, there was an actual move.

Today's moves (via Bruce Miles' twitter):
- Cubs have outrighted Chris Volstad, Manny Corpas, Joe Mather, Justin Germano, and Blake Parker
- Chris Volstad was claimed on waivers by the Royals
- Manny Corpas has opted for free agency rather than accept assignment to minor leagues
The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was to convince the world he didn't exist.

Prior moves (also via Bruce's twitter):
- Wednesday: Cubs outright Anthony Recker, Adrian Cardenas, Jason Berken, Miguel Socolovich, and Marcos Mateo to remove them from 40-man roster
- Anthony Recker was claimed off waivers by the Mets.
- The Cubs claimed RHP Carlos Gutierrez off waivers by the Twins.

EDIT: These moves puts the Cubs' 40-man roster at 33 (Mateo and Parker were on the 60-day DL, and weren't on the roster), plus Garza and Stewart are on the 60-day DL.

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs and outfielder Nate Schierholtz have agreed to terms on a one-year contract.  Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Additionally, left-handed pitcher Jeff Beliveau was claimed off waivers by the Texas Rangers and right-handed pitcher Sandy Rosario was claimed off waivers by the San Francisco Giants.  Left-handed pitcher Gerardo Concepcion cleared waivers and was assigned outright to Single-A Kane County.

Schierholtz, 28, is a career .270 hitter (344-for-1,275) with 75 doubles, 15 triples, 24 home runs and 123 RBI in 540 major league games covering all or part of the last six seasons with the San Francisco Giants (2007-12) and Philadelphia Phillies (2012).  The left-handed batter and right-handed thrower has spent the majority of his big league career playing right field (420 games, 261 starts), where he owns a .989 fielding percentage (seven errors in 616 total chances).  Schierholtz has also seen limited time in center field and left field.

The 6-foot-2, 217-pound Schierholtz had spent his entire professional career within the Giants organization before being dealt to the Phillies as part of a four-player trade on July 31, 2012.  He combined to hit .257 (62-for-241) with eight doubles, five triples and six home runs in 114 games between the clubs last season.

Originally selected by San Francisco in the second round of the 2003 First-Year Player Draft, Schierholtz made his major league debut with the Giants in 2007 at the age of 23 and was a big league mainstay by 2009.  He was a member of San Francisco’s 2010 World Championship team and followed that season with his strongest full major league campaign when he hit .278 (93-for-335) and set career bests with 22 doubles, nine home runs and 41 RBI in 2011.

Schierholtz is a native of Reno, Nev. and a graduate of San Ramon Valley (Calif.) High School.  He was selected by the Giants out of Chabot College in Hayward, Calif.

Chicago’s 40-man roster now stands at 39 players

CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs and right-handed pitcher Carlos Villanueva have agreed to terms on a two-year contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

To make room for Villanueva on the 40-man roster, right-handed pitcher Lendy Castillo has been designated for assignment.

Villanueva, 29, joins the Cubs after pitching the last seven seasons with Milwaukee (2006-10) and Toronto (2011-12). The versatile Villanueva has made 56 starts and 245 relief appearances during his major league career, going 33-35 with six saves and a 4.26 ERA (311 ER/657.1 IP) in 301 big league outings. In his most recent two seasons with the Blue Jays, Villanueva made 29 starts and 42 relief appearances.

Last season, Villanueva carried a 7-4 record and a 3.10 ERA (34 ER/98.2 IP) in 33 appearances (11 starts) through the end of August before struggling during the season’s final month with a 0-3 record and an 8.10 ERA (24 ER/26.2 IP) in five starts in September. Overall in 2012, Villanueva went 7-7 with a 4.16 ERA (58 ER/125.1 IP) in 38 appearances (16 starts) with the Blue Jays.

Villanueva made his major league debut with Milwaukee in 2006 and became a big league mainstay by the 2008 season. He set a career high with 64 appearances in 2009 and averaged a career-best 11.4 strikeouts per nine innings in 2010, his lone season pitching exclusively in relief, before joining the Blue Jays in 2011. Villanueva last season set career highs with 125.1 innings pitched, 16 starts and 122 strikeouts.

Overall in his career, Villanueva has limited opponents to a .248 batting average against and a .315 on-base percentage against. He has averaged 7.8 strikeouts and 3.1 walks per nine innings.

A native of Santiago, D.R., Villanueva originally signed with San Francisco as a non-drafted free agent in 2002. He was traded to Milwaukee just days prior to the 2004 season and was traded to Toronto during the 2010-11 offseason.

Castillo went 0-1 with a 7.88 ERA (14 ER/16.0 IP) in 13 relief outings for the Cubs last season.
