They signed Brandon League to a 3 year 21.5M deal.

JIM BOWDEN ‏@JimBowdenESPNxm
Dodgers source confirms $21.5m for 3 yrs with Brandon League....tremendous deal by his agents Sam and Seth Levinson of Aces #confirmed

It's going to be amazing to watch Ned Colletti blow all this money.

@mike_petriello
Before we even find out what League's contract is for, the Dodgers already have $88m committed... for 2015.

I expect them to give Greinke a 8 year $200mm+ offer

The Dodgers have identified James Shields as their top target, Mark Saxon of ESPNLosAngeles.com reports (hat tip: Rays Index). The Rays will exercise the right-hander’s 2013 option, but could consider trading him as a way of freeing up payroll and addressing other needs.
Dodgers GM Ned Colletti aims to add a starting pitcher this offseason, Saxon writes. Shields would be an excellent fit, as I suggested when previewing the Dodgers’ offseason. The 30-year-old posted a 3.52 ERA with 8.8 K/9 and 2.3 BB/9 in 227 2/3 innings this past season and his contract includes an option for 2014.
Colletti said he has also spoken to the agent for left-handed reliever Randy Choate. The Dodgers made their first major offseason move last night, signing Brandon League to a three-year deal.

Good god. This is just a wreckless contract, I don't care how liquid the Dodgers are. It's blatant disregard for market value of a pitcher like League.

Yeah, the market value for decent relief pitching just went up. That said, one year of Marmol might start looking pretty good to teams right about now.

It will start looking good as long as the Cubs eat some of the money.

Stupid Dodgers. They're never going to win the Efficiency Award with all this money they are spending.

Well, there's kind of a huge difference in overpaying for players who are actually good at baseball and doing what Ned Colletti is doing. That's a pretty poor effort, even for you.

Have they signed any bad baseball players?

They're overpaying the market for good but not great players, sure.

He's an average late inning guy who's never been worth more than 1.3 WAR and he'll be 30 at the beginning of next season. They're paying over $7 MM per year to a guy who shouldn't be getting more than about $3-4 MM max. For the money he's being paid, yes, he's a bad player. He has a combined 3.5 WAR over the last 4 years. $5 mm per year to fill a gaping hole, okay, but to sign him to that deal when he hasn't even hit the open market is asinine.

This forum will be a better place when people just stop arguing with Kyle.

So in other words, he's not a bad player but they overpaid the market for him.

It'll be an even better better place when people stop trying to inject that into every conversation. It's not hurting you, leave me alone.

You can't take on this persona you do and then play the victim and PM people asking why they don't like you.

1) This isn't a persona.

2) PM people? I may have done that, but I don't remember doing it and it doesn't sound like something I'd do. I did PM some mods some times asking for rules clarifications, that's the closest I can think of.

3) You don't have to like me. But you don't need to follow my posts around telling people not to have conversations with me, either. That's just rude.

Anyway, back on topic because this thread doesn't have to be about Kyle.

I'd rather have League at 3/$21 than what we had in the bullpen last year.

Brandon League is a reliever.

A reliever with a sub-7 K/9.

A reliever with a sub-7 K/9 that just posted a 4+ BB/9 and a hilariously low(read: outlier) HR rate.

A reliever getting paid 7 million dollars a year for 3 years at age 30 to join a bullpen where you have to squint to make him a Top 3 option.

There's a point to be made with the obnoxious "efficiency awards" rhetoric, but this is not the time. This is a laugh out loud horrible decision for the Dodgers, and only the most lassez-faire "it's not my money" supporter could characterize it as anything but a dumb decision.

He's a good relief pitcher. They overpaid for a good relief pitcher.

xFIP the last three seasons: 3.52, 3.09, 3.99.

Yes, the HR-rate isn't likely to be 0.13 every year, but it's generally going to be very low, because he's an extreme ground ball pitcher.

Yes, it's fun to laugh at overpays, and this is clearly an overpay. But I'd rather overpay than leave money on the table.

Kyle, bullpens are a crapshoot. You know that. In all honesty, we can throw a Marmol, Russell, Camp, Bowden, Dolis, and 2 one year, cheap guys out there and wind up with a decent pen. All League's deal does is up the price and years for the Brandon Lyons, Jon Rauchs, and Matt Capps of the world. If you can get Madson on a one year, absolutely go for it. If Marmol gets dealt? Give out a contract to 1 of those 3 I just listed. But spending on your Howry, Eyre types should be reserved for when we have a chance AND a need. I'm hoping we develop those guys before it's an actual need.
