As long as we aren't giving up much, this could be a pretty solid pick up.

Well, this is the perfect pickup for what we are doing so long as it doesn't cost any real prospects.

He is on a one-year contract. We need starting pitchers. If he does well, he is traded at the deadline. If he doesn't, he's gone after the season. We also don't have to convince him to only sign a one-year contract like we would some free agent pitcher.

I'd almost be surprised if this didn't happen, unless multiple teams have strong interest and start to actually offer up some sort of package.

I'll be a little surprised if it doesn't take a real prospect or two honestly. Haren had been worth 36 WAR over the 7 previous seasons, prior to him getting hurt last year. Just getting him on a one year deal has value within itself. Whether its us or whoever, I'll put the over/under on value going back to the Angels as Vittersish.

Its the perfect pickup even if it does cost a decent prospect (someone in the Vitters/Watkins/McNutt vein?).

Worst case (assuming his back is OK and his performance after his return indicates that) is he doesn't bounce back and you make in a QO next year and get him back on another pillow contract/get draft pick compensation if he signs elsewhere. Best case is he is the top targeted SP at the trade deadline.

Trading for Haren is basically going to guarantee that at the very least, you get to add at least a first round-ish prospect down the line. Don't really think of what Haren will do for the Cubs on the field next year (because we aren't going to contend), think about what Haren will net the Cubs when he leaves. And that will be more than just a decent prospect.

He's a pitcher. The worst case is always that he blows out his arm or elbow and you get nothing.

Wouldn't be against it though he's past 30 and wasn't that good last year

I think the worst case is that he gets a communicable disease and infects the entire team in Spring Training before falling into an irreversible coma.

I might be wrong, but we can't get compensation for Haren since he didn't finish last year with the team, right?

Nope. We would be able to get a pick for him if he sticks with us all year and we make a qualifying offer next offseason.

If we continue our trend of leaving half our best players in Iowa, that might actually be a good thing?

You man if he sticks on our roster all season in 2013? I would definitely think so. Not sure thats what you're asking though. If you're asking if we trade for him, decline the option, offer him arb, and he declines, then no, we get nothing.

Oh, it's only in season deals that are ineligible. Not sure why I thought otherwise.

Dang, never mind. That is a worst-case scenario, then.

As was mentioned on PSD, I'd love to get a package of Haren and Bourjos.

I like the idea of Haren more the more I think/read about it. Fangraphs made a good case for him, and someone over at BN pointed out that he adds about half a win per year with his bat when he's in the NL.

Beyond the Box Score did a really nice write up on Haren and his history vs. his poor 2012 today...

Apparently we just traded Carlos Marmol in a deal for Dan Haren? I'm seeing reports on Twitter.

#Cubs RHP Carlos Marmol has confirmed that he's been traded to the #Angels, according to @YancenPujols. Could be part of a Dan Haren trade.

RT @MikeDiGiovanna: #Angels are on the verge of trading RHP Dan Haren to the #Cubs for RH reliever Carlos Marmol.

Weird source, but Brett picked it up as well...

http://www.bleachernation.com/2012/11/0 ... dan-haren/

According to Yancen Pujols of the Caribbean, a Dominican media outlet, Carlos Marmol says he’s been traded to the Angels. Given the timing, if it’s true, it seems like Dan Haren will be involved.

Obviously I’ll have many updates as soon as possible.

Could just be smoke, but would be awesome if true, if that's all it took (+ money, I'd assume)

I wonder if money will change hands. I tentatively like this though.
