Cubs interested in McCarthy and Marcum

Postby David » Wed Nov 07, 2012 10:36 am

http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/11/c ... um=twitter

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball ... arcum.html

With starting pitching the Cubs’ primary focus again this winter, they already have expressed interest in Athletics right-hander Brandon McCarthy, who was having a good season until suffering a skull fracture when hit by a line drive in September. He underwent surgery and didn’t pitch again this season but appears to be healthy enough for a comeback effort in 2013.

Brewers free agent Shaun Marcum, a 2009 Tommy John surgery graduate who missed two months in 2012 with elbow tightness, is another buy-low candidate the Cubs are eyeing — and a guy whose character they know well through manager Dale Sveum and pitching coach Chris Bosio.

Not sure about the wording on Marcum meaning that they plan to express interest or already have. Also, who knows if he isn't just piggybacking on that SF report about McCarthy that, given the wording, wasn't all that solid, IMO.

It will be in August when Wood is the only healthy/non-traded one.

If they actually did all that, you'd have to figure the upper levels of the farm would be stocked to an absurd extent (and the lower levels already are pretty well stocked)... but yea... that's just Kyle being Kyle.

Hell, with a rotation like that, they'd have a hard time being bad enough to be sellers if they aren't as completely awful at CF and 3B and/or Rizzo and Castro take steps forward. The bullpen probably won't be as bad, either.

That is, obviously, barring injury, which is definitely a reasonable cause for concern with pitchers, especially those.

Or hurt. One of the two by August.

Marcum is another guy I thought I had read was several years older than he actually is. I prefer him to McCarthy, honestly.

Agreed. McCarthy is a funny guy on twitter and stuff, but on the mound he's just a worse version of Rich Harden.

In what way is McCarthy any version of Harden?

He pitched for the A's, got injured, and the Cubs are interested in him. They're practically twins.
The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was to convince the world he didn't exist.

Oft-injured pitcher.

And by oft, I mean this year.

During a "Not For Women Only" panel discussion, former Cubs pitcher Mike Bielecki asked several players to invent a baseball catch phrase for Viagra. Theriot's ad campaign: "Viagra -- I always play hard."

He's a good pitcher who has a terrible time staying healthy and pitched for the A's prior to (potentially) pitching for the Cubs.

Fun to think about in your rotation, but completely incapable of making it through a season without an arm problem.

That's a very vague comparison. Harden was a dominating while able to pitch pitcher while McCarthy has been a nice arm to have around when he's been able to pitch.

And 2011. And 2010. And 2009. And 2008. And 2007.

And like Harden, iirc, most of the problems are in the shoulder.

McCarthy's 2011 was better than just about anything Harden ever did.

Harden's 12 starts for the Cubs in '08 generated more bWAR than McCarthy's entire '11

And McCarthy's fWAR was 2.7 higher than Harden's time with the Cubs in '08, and .3 points higher than his entire '08.

It's much better than fWAR at describing what happened.

Wins are great at describing what happened, too. So are RBIs.

I'll take the one that's much better at describing how well the pitcher pitched.
