I don't know why the Rangers would agree to this trade, but I won't complain. Loux is a great addition

Seriously, why would Texas do that? Was Brigham hurt and Texas knew it when they traded him to us? I mean, this makes no sense. Unless Loux's arm is falling off again.

That was my first thought.

Evidentky, that exactly what happened. This is a reworked Geo trade. Cool.

So this essentially became Geo for Loux and a PTBNL? I like that very much.

Tell me why you're all excited. I don't know anything about Barret Loux.

Was the #6 or 7 pick in the draft a couple years back. Failed his physical and was declared a FA when the Diamondbacks decided not to try to rework a deal. Signed with the Rangers for $300k or so.

Great talent, questionable health.

Ok, then. Now I see why everyone is excited. Sweet.

OK, the catch is that his arm is barely attached to his body.

He was the 6th overall pick in the draft a couple years ago. Arizona voided his signing because of shoulder issues. Texas signed him for 450k or so. We were interested too. He went 14-1 with a sub 3.50 ERA in AA this year. Texas League too, complete hitters paradise.

Basically.

Hopefully "badass minor league training staff" is a new market inefficiency.

Parks like Brigham's stuff better actually. Of course, he's hurt.

This article says he was a heavy signability pick at No. 6 overall and outlines the deal where he ended up not signing with Arizona:

http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=j ... acks080310

Here's his Lone Star Ball scouting report from February:
http://www.lonestarball.com/2012/2/9/27 ... ing-report

He threw ~130 innings this year before going on the DL with "fatigue." Peripherals were not above-average across the board but nothing eyepopping. His ceiling is considered pretty ordinary. But as always in our system, AA or AAA starting pitchers who are actually prospects are a nice plus.

Interesting that the Rangers re-acquired Brigham for Loux. Brigham the slightly better prospect, for me, but not a top guy (nor was Loux).

Jason Cole ‏@LoneStarDugout
Loux had strong results at Double-A Frisco this season, but the stuff had taken a step back. I'll write him up tonight.

Adam J. Morris ‏@lonestarball
I thought so at the time of the deal. RT @GeoffEneman is Brigham better than Loux?

Jason Parks ‏@ProfessorParks
If healthy, Brigham has sharper stuff; better chance for impact. RT @webberoo11 @ProfessorParks Not sure i like Brigham more than Loux

Anthony Andro ‏@aandro
It was a right elbow strain that slowed Brigham with Cubs. Didn't need surgery.

Scott Lucas ‏@scottrlucas
Brigham vs Loux in Frisco:, facing almost same # of batters: 16 more Ks, 38 more swinging strikes for Brigham, but much more hard contact.

Well, we need lefties and his FB sits low 90's supposedly. We have none of those guys. Plus, we still get a PTBNL. Still love it.

I think he's a righty...although I guess when his arm falls off he'll have to switch if he wants to stick around.

Sounds very Randy Wells-ish to me.

88-91. Gets hurt when leaves ball up, below to average secondary stuff.

Had great stats, but the reports aren't very glowing. Health will always be a concern.

From what I read/have heard, he's more 91-93 ish. Changes speeds well with his fastball, has an OK changeup, but can't get the curve or slider to do much. But I would say he has much more command than Wells. Not that Wells walked a ton of people (until this past year), but he just never seemed to be able to put the ball where he wanted it as well as I think Loux can...in the sense of missing bats, causing weak contact, making "pitcher's pitches". If the Cubs can get Loux's offspeed stuff to do anything, he could be a solid #3 starter.

But yeah health wise, he's probably always going to miss starts here and there in his career.
