I like it as a low risk move, but I really hope that our quest for starting pitching doesn't end with Baker and Feldman.

Patrick Mooney ‏@CSNMooney
#Cubs have signed RHP Scott Feldman to a one-year deal worth $6 million plus $1 million in incentives.

It would appears as though he's gonna get a chance to start. Interesting move.

Not bad as rotation depth and he's had past success.

Good move. My guess is they'll still add a McCarthy type as well. Or Liriano, especially if Wood gets dealt.

Finishing off the rotation, I suspect.

If you squint really hard, there's kind of something there. He's going from AL to NL, which is always nice, and the peripherals are solid. SIERA slobbers all over him. A Rangers fan on another board said he can hit a little bit, though it's hard to tell with 22 career PAs.

official release wrote:CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs and right-handed pitcher Scott Feldman have agreed to terms on a one-year contract. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Feldman, 29, has pitched all or part of the last eight seasons with the Texas Rangers (2005-12), going 39-44 with a 4.81 ERA (389 ER/727.2 IP) in 204 appearances, 101 as a starter. The versatile righthander has made 20 or more starts in four of the last five seasons while also making 30 relief appearances in that span. He began his major league career by pitching exclusively in relief his first three seasons before transitioning into a starting role in 2008.

The 6-foot-7, 230-pound Feldman enjoyed a breakout campaign in 2009 when he went 17-8 with a 4.08 ERA (86 ER/189.2 IP) in 34 appearances, including a career-high 31 starts. He ranked among American League leaders in wins (tied for fourth) and winning percentage (seventh, .680) while setting a single-season franchise record with 12 wins on the road. He was named the Rangers Opening Day starter a year later and went 7-11 with a 5.48 ERA (86 ER/141.1 IP) in 29 appearances (22 starts) in 2010.

After missing the first half of the 2011 campaign to recover from right knee surgery, Feldman joined the Rangers after the All-Star Break and went 2-1 with a 3.94 ERA (14 ER/32.0 IP) in 11 appearances (two starts). He went 1-0 with a 3.29 ERA (5 ER/13.2 IP) in nine post-season relief outings.

Feldman went 6-11 with a 5.09 ERA (70 ER/123.2 IP) in 29 outings (21 starts) with the Rangers last season.

Originally selected by the Rangers in the 30th round of the 2003 Draft, Feldman made his major league debut just two years later when he posted a 0.96 ERA (1 ER/9.1 IP) in eight relief outings in 2005.

Feldman was born in Kailua, Hawaii and resides in Peoria, Ariz.

Like the move :good: . I think it's pretty clear pitching is going to be very expensive this offseason though with the early signings (Feldman gett $6mm this year and the Guthrie contract).

Awesome.

So right now our rotation is Samardzija/Garza/Baker/Feldman/Wood with depth/swing men/Iowa guys being Vizcaino/Bowden/Cabrera/Rusin/Struck (unless he gets Rule V'd) and maybe Lout. Am I missing anyone?

That's an awesome response from Brandon McCarthy.

I like it. Feldman should be a decent rotation candidate. They've got a full-rotation now, but I imagine they'll probably add another piece (or two), giving them the option of shopping a guy, putting someone in the pen, or starting Wood in AAA if they feel he needs more work.

With Baker/Feldman, you simply hope that one of them pitches well enough that they can shop them at mid-season. Hopefully both, but at least one.

Raley and Coleman, I guess. Also it's Loux not Lout, but he's not even on the 40 man so I don't think he'll be in the mix unless he goes nuts this year.

Add one more starter and I'll feel pretty good with Shark/Garza/?/Feldman/Baker/Wood/Vizcaino as a depth chart.

Brooks Raley probably fits in somewhere. Wouldn't surprise me if Loux was in AA. I think Bowden will end up being in a pen somewhere, AAA or the bigs, and I wonder if Alberto Cabrera ends up staying in the pen, despite stretching him out. Whitenack getting a 40 man spot probably means that if he gets off to a strong start, he could fit in the picture somewhere in terms of that depth/swing/Iowa (and I'd add emergency) list. And TT is right, as of now, Coleman deserves to be listed.

Solid pickup. After watching the disaster that was 2012's pitching staff, I really want to see the Cubs go 7-8 deep on a rotation. Letting Casey Coleman out there is a recipe for disaster.

I don't know but there are more than a few guys, if dropped, that wouldn't be missed.

I don't see a problem with this one. Nice little pickup -- hope it works out. Seems like a decent chance it will.
