Allegedly not. But it is kind of weird.

I think he's a bit overrated, but he should make for some nice depth and I like having him more than not having him.

Cool.

There just have to be a few trades on the way. Garza and/or Marmol are gone for non 40 man roster players. Plus a few cuts to fringy guys. Whats our total overage right now?

I'll go ahead and wait until I see him in a Cub uniform at Spring Training before I get excited.

He has relieved more than started over the past few years.

Garza
Samardzija
Wood
Villanueva
Baker/Feldman

hard to complain, especially when put up against the 2012 debacle

I'm not even convinced he's better than Wood, let alone Feldman. It'd be odd if we promised him a rotation spot, but that's what he supposedly wanted to sign.

Make sure it's reported by someone other than Muskat that he's there.

Who are the odd men out if we also add Jackson?

Adding Villaneuva and still pursuing Edwin Jackson makes me real concerned that the Rumors about Garza's arm that ABTY was talking about are real.

I would think Villanueva ends up in the pen. I know he wants to start, but that doesn't seem to make much sense for us.

Cameron mentioned we signed all 3 of his value signings. Not bad. But I still want Edwin.

Kind of weird how good he was from May to August and then how crappy he was in Sept and April.

Is there a plausible explanation or just variance?

Walked WAYYY more guys as a reliever.

If it is true we signed him, this is my pick for the signing we all look back on and love. I'm a fan of CV. He will help us.

There's not an actual reason to carry a lefty in the rotation, right?

@CarrieMuskat: #Cubs are talking to free agent Carlos Villanueva & also Edwin Jackson. Nothing done yet

Jon Heyman ‏@JonHeymanCBS
Edwin Jackson is in play for #cubs. #rangers have some interest. #padres stopped at 3 yrs and bowed out yesterday.

I think I've seen numbers showing lefties fare better at Wrigley hitting, so I suppose having a lefty in the rotation who is the equal to a righty might have a small positive effect. But unless you're confident that lefty is as good or better than his RH competition, there's no reason to just arbitrarily have one in there.

I guess in theory it could help force other teams to mix players in and out of the lineup and break up their hitting rhythm.

But really, no.

Rogers says possibly one year deal for Villanueva.

Interesting...

I was hoping for a 3 year deal so we have him signed if he does as well in the NL as I think he will - hopefully we at least have an option
