Should MLB limit mound visits?

Postby Derwood » Thu Nov 02, 2017 3:28 am

There is a limit on number of visits from the dugout (before having to change pitchers), but there is no limit on number of visits from the catcher/infielders.

In Game 7 of the World Series, McCann visited the mound roughly a billion times.

Should MLB add a rule limiting these visits?

Limiting mound visits is a contrived solution to a contrived problem that doesn’t exist/won’t make a difference (length of games keeping viewers away).

Mound visits 90%+ of the time serve a real purpose and are necessary

I didn't suggest they eliminate them, just limit them. If the pitcher and catcher can't get on the same page, they shouldn't be allowed to stop the game 5 times in an inning to chat. Every other sport has a limit on "timeouts", why not baseball?

Just because every other sport does it why should MLB? Why is it a problem? How does changing things make the game better (probably makes it worse, more wild pitches/cross ups)?

I'm all for preventing the manager from coming out to make the switch after the catcher has already visited the mound to stall even more.

Every other sport has a limit on timeouts because they're timed.

Mound visits increase, for many teams dramatically, with higher leverage and stakes. They grind the game to a halt and help feed the perception of a game dragging on. Limit them to one an inning.

Contreras was a big contributor to this issue this year.

I am all in favor of doing anything that speeds up the pace of play. If games go super long, I want it to be because exciting things are happening on the field. Things like Nationals-Cubs game 4 where 5 runs were scored and 9 pitchers combined were used going almost 4 hours is hard.
