Clinching the NL is but a formality at this point. As a probable 100+ team, we shouldn't be afraid of an 85-87 win at best team fresh off an adrenalin rush, but I'd just as soon avoid too much excitement in round 1. So who we wanna play?

My vote goes to the Mets, and it's not close. All their pitches are breaking down, and their offense isn't particularly frightening.

The Cardinals would be most exciting, but been there, done that, and it would suck for them to take round 2.

No reason to want to face the Giants. I'd hate for anything to come down to their cavernous hell of a ballpark with MadBum and Cueto on the mound for at least 3/5.

Honestly, genuinely, truly, don't care a lick. None of these teams are any good, and while freaky things happen in the playoffs, I don't really see where any one has a better chance against the Cubs than any other.

If we're just talking about matching up on paper, I'd most prefer to play the Cardinals. But I can't stand the thought of losing to them, and the Mets are pretty close to the Cardinals in my mind, so I pick them.

I know the Giants have a mediocre offense and have played terrible in the 2nd half, but they are the only team that has 2 pitchers that i somewhat fear (definitely Bum, slightly less Cueto) and while their park is beautiful, I don't like when the Cubs play there as I feel like we never play well, less donging opportunities in night games, and a big OF with weird crevices that slightly lessens our defensive advantage and allows for a fluke bounce to change the course of a game.

They are all pretty close though.

So its the Mets. They seem beatable to me, and as far as pain from losing to them, it can't be all that much worse than losing to them last year. But if they beat the Mets, I will happily peruse Mets Refugees to soak up their anguish

What are Mets fans saying?

We are the Cubs worst nightmare, though. We hit their pitchers surprisingly well, even with our horsefeathers lineup this year. If we somehow took game 1 of a series against them, they would all be collectively [expletive] themselves so hard

I want to tango with the Cubs. I can accept getting beat down by them but I love the idea of potentially torturing their fans one way or another.

Call me crazy but I really like our potential matchup against the Cubs, especially in a short series. That makes all the difference if you can win Game 1 on the road, just like last year.

And then several other posts saying "the Cubs are scared of us"

Thor will start the play-in game, meaning what, he'd pitch G3 at the earliest? If they honestly think they won't leave Wrigley down 2-0 using Matz and Colon, well then I'm not sure what to say.

They're less of a bunch of mewling turds than too many Cubs fans, that's what. FEAR NOBODY.

I say let them use all 3 teams rosters to build the best 25-man team they can and then play that one. Just so we have a challenge

Of course the Mets fans want to play us. They literally have to play us if the get in the wild Card and win. We (Cubs fans) can pick and choose who we want to play. They can't. So they irrationally think that they can beat us, because they know they have to.

Just not a Giants team that pitches Bumgarner on one of the last 2 days of the regular season(And even if he goes Saturday, I could see him going short rest in the WC game.)

He's currently on track to pitch the last Thursday of the season although they could easily move him up to pitch Friday against the Dodgers. Either way, he wouldn't be available to pitch in a Monday tiebreaker unless he goes Thursday and then Monday on short rest. That's the biggest worry day in terms of him getting 2 LDS starts imo.

The correct is answer is definitely the Mets, though. They just got swept at home by the Braves. This is a bad baseball team. They are lucky the Wild Card fell back to them. Whoever wins it is going to be an 86-win team. It's going to be a bad playoff team. And the Mets are the worst of the bunch. Their offense is old and they aren't athletic. They are also just bad. Really bad. They can't hit for average. They don't walk. They strike out a lot. They are really bad at running the bases. They are bad defensively. They hit for a little power. But they all sell out for power. That's their only skill, and they lack in other areas offensively because of it. They don't go the other way, or try to get base hits, or doubles down the line. They sell out for power. They are the Cardinals, except they are much worse at it than the Cardinals. Their best position player -- Walker -- is injured. Of their healthy players, Asdrubal Cabrera has the second-most WAR. Curtis Granderson is third, with 1.5. Just yesterday, they started T.J. Rivera, Alejandro De Aza, James Loney, and Rene Rivera.

Last year's Mets team was different. And they had everything clicking at the right time. Guys like Cespedes, Duda, and Granderson all had incredible second-halves and continued playing over their heads into the playoffs. And then Daniel Murphy turned into god-mode. And Wright and d'Arnaud were inexplicably healthy. And they made some nice moves bringing in some solid veterans like Uribe to augment the lineup and bench. And Conforto was pre-broken.

And the pitching...

Somehow the stars were aligned for all those guys to be healthy at the same time last year. Harvey... gone. DeGrom... gone. Matz hasn't pitched in a month, and has had problems with the bone spur and now his shoulder, not to mention a lengthy injury history already. If they are relying on him to be healthy, they are playing with fire. Even Syndergaard hasn't been quite the same since they found out he had a bone spur, either. He's walking a few more guys, he isn't striking out quite as many. He's been prone to have a blow-up game where nothing is working. He's having trouble putting guys away, and he isn't working as deep into games. He's still been very good, but not quite as infallible as he looked earlier this year. And Colon doesn't concern me at all. He's somehow put together a very strong year despite being 65-years-old and throwing nothing but 87-mph fastballs. But, still, he's striking out less than 6 per 9 innings. And if you look at his season, he's feasted against inferior lineups. That horsefeathers might fly against the Braves and Phillies, who don't know how to put together ABs. But look at his numbers against us, the Dodgers, and Nationals. We will feast off of him. He isn't sneaking things past our guys. And if Matz isn't healthy, he's their second best starter, and the only one that will pitch twice.

Bring on the Mets.

Probably Giants. I don't really think matchups or quality matters enough to make a meaningful difference in a short series. So it comes down to who I want to lose to the least. Having to put up with another "Hurr durr even year magic" run would suck, but not as bad as letting the Cardinals even out last year or the Mets double down on it.

Still rooting for Miami to make an improbable run.

Bring on the Mets.

This was so well written that I am now actively rooting for the Mets to be the opponent instead of just having a casual preference for them.
