Wow, the money here really surprises me. 1) He was ranked top 50ish or so and 2) He's a Boras client.

For him to fall to the 5th, with that type of figure is surprising. It'll be very interesting to see Estrada's number.

Also, when he was drafted, I thought his name was Erlich a la Erlich Bachman. It was pretty disappointing to find out it's not but I think I'm still going to call him Erlich.

That's a shock. So, we're saving 173k on Little, probably 100k apiece or so on Carrier and Glowicki, and have the overage of 374k to use on Estrada....Basically, we can offer 950,000-1M on Estrada, assuming the 9-10th round seniors are savings of at least 100k. And Lange and Velázquez come in at slot.

Thanks for the numbers Dave, and agree it's a surprise. Bad one, but perhaps also a good one.

Bad re Estrada: maybe we don't have that much to spend on him, maybe they won't even get him signed, and even if they do maybe that means he wasn't valued as that great of a prospect; if he barely gets a million and the rest of the league let him go to round 6 because they didn't think he was worth even a mill.

But I think it's very good re Abbott. Think we've been assuming he was a budget pick, was taken to save $$ for Estrada, and isn't really a legit 2nd-round talent. This suggests that the Cubs scouting saw otherwise. There were other college pitchers who'd have signed for the same slot value; Cubs obviously liked him a lot better than some of the media scouting sources, or perhaps better than other teams. Of course it's possible that they mis-scouted him and he'll prove he's not really a 2nd-round value.

But I think the Cubs have some smart scouts and are pretty thorough. I'm really pretty happy that they think he's good enough to be worth full 2nd-round slot, and that he was the best BPA there. That's more fun and makes me more optimistic than if they think he's a 4th round talent.

What the hell? So essentially the Cubs liked Abbot more than absolutely everyone. That's a headscratcher.

Also, have I mentioned how much I horsefeathering hate having college draft picks still in the CWS? Mainieri inexcusably had Lange throw 115 pitches today. He was at exactly 100 pitches through 6 innings. He put him out there again for the 7th, in which he threw another 13 pitches, and then had him face the first batter of the 8th. This was simply absurd.

Lange was 90-93 (mostly 91) again. His curve is pretty damn great when he's commanding it. However, he lost all command of it in the 3rd inning and ended up walking in a run. Still ended up with 8 K's in the 7.1 IP against one of the best college teams we've seen in a decade. I'm not sure I could even classify the few changeups I saw today as "show me", though. They were pretty bad.

Lange 8K/4BB/2hits over 7.1. Walked in a run in the 3rd, that was it, and was apparently cruising down the stretch, I believe got last 8 guys and 12 of last 13. Kendall Rogers said he K'd the last guy in the 7th with a 93 mph fastball.

Yeah, I agree with Craig....Its definitely intriguing that we gave Abbott that much. We obviously valued him as a true 2nd rounder. If we get Estrada as a 950k-1M type, that's cool too. I think I'm more intrigued that we're giving Abbott that much, than I am if Estrada is getting a bit less than I'd have thought.....

And yeah, its frustrating as hell seeing these guys pitch in the CWS, especially at 110+ pitches....

Just an FYI, Lange gave up what should have been a 2-run double in that third but the umps ruled it foul and inexplicably didn't review it.

Kinda shocked we didn't sign anyone to underslot deals, what a weird year to shy away from that strategy with the extra first round pick.

Better than the AA caliber talent he faced in the SEC?

This might be why:

Seth: Do you think flatter slot values have reduced the amount of underslot/overslot pick combinations? Any picks today with significant signability questions?

Eric A Longenhagen: I do, or at least it makes it harder to target specific players later on and necessitates the teams take a more significant under slot haircuts.

Connecting a few dots, although it could be coincidental obviously....Clarke Schmidt just signed with the Yankees for 2,184,300. Our EXACT slot at pick 30.

That's a savings of $258,000 to go with the $173,300 underslot from Little and the overage bonus of $372,745 for a total of $804,845 for the Cubs to play with.

Top 10 picks yet unsigned:

1a. RHP Alex Lange ($2,184,300 slot) - BA ranked 34th
5. OF Nelson Velasquez ($285,800 slot) - BA ranked 202nd
6. RHP Jeremiah Estrada ($222,600 slot) - BA ranked 121st

For those that don't want to do the math, that leaves $3,497,545 to signs 3 guys and possibly some overslots in rounds 11-16.

Right, but what do you think it means? That he had a deal in place with the Cubs and the Yankees swooped in?
