This year? How about the day after the draft?

Unless we trade for a competitive balance pick, who cares? We won't be picking until like the 3rd or 4th round and our draft pool is really limited.

Fall to the third(!):

Keith Law wrote:Right-hander Reggie Lawson of Victor Valley High School in Victorville, California, was a favorite of many scouts last summer thanks to his loose arm and easy delivery, as well as a fastball up to 95 mph in short stints. On Saturday morning, in a game moved up four hours to avoid some rain that never arrived, Lawson showed the loose arm and great projection, but the delivery has gone a bit backward and will need to be cleaned up.

Lawson was mostly 88-92 mph on Saturday, touching 95-96 about three times over the course of his too-long seven innings, getting a lot of swings and misses on the pitch but also giving up too much hard contact because he had little deception and left the ball up frequently. His curveball has good rotation and two-plane break, ranging anywhere from 66-74 mph; at the upper end of the range, it's a good pitch, potentially plus, but a 66 mph curveball is cute and not very effective regardless of who's throwing it. He flashed a slider and changeup but barely threw either pitch, going with the curveball when he wanted a called strike.

Lawson's frame is projectable and he's very athletic, so it's a shock to see that his delivery has regressed since last summer.

Some parralels to Underwood in his draft season, still my favorite non-Groome HS arm this year.

----

This doesn't matter at all for the Cubs, but Alec Hansen looks completely different this year in a good way. Could be the best college RHSP prospect since Cole in 2011.

That Lawson report did read like one of Underwood's then year Duane was drafted.

Your Hansen hyperbole seems extreme when you consider Alec didn't make it out of the second in his first start and only went 3 in his second start.

Yeah, that comment about Hansen is ridiculous. He's a quality prospect, but might be not even end up a SP. There's more Dellin Betances as a college aged pitcher (Betances was in pro ball) than Justin Verlander or Gerritt Cole. I do like his new delivery this year, so there's that.

The Lawson comment is off since I like Jeff Belge better and Nick Lodolo is right there.

Guess I missed this thread the first time around, but this, if at all.

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

It does suck, but I think Groome is better than guys like Giolito and Aiken coming out of HS.

6'3" 220 MiamiU C Zack Collins this season so far: .424/.583/.718 with 7 HRs and 20 Ks in ~120 PAs

Another one I'd like the option for in the 3rd:

http://www.baseballamerica.com/draft/dr ... henderson/

Yo and forget all these pitchers. Taint the reputation of Avery Tuck enough for him to fall to the third and sign. Say he's a communist or something.

At this rate, Alec Hansen should be available in the third.

Some kind of oblique strain? Could be what's necessary to fall to the third. Between that and turning 19 in August, real ancient, maybe he's relatively signable.

Lawson alternatives among the HS Ps, in no order:

Cole Ragans LHP
Nick Lodolo LHP
Charles King RHP - white Reggie Lawson
Ian Anderson RHP
Matt Cleveland RHP - Less so than others here
Alex Spaes RHP - Arm speed
Nolan Jones RHP - This draft's Jack Flaherty?
Zach Hess RHP - Premium frame and arm strength
Zach Leferjahn RHP - Odorizzi starter kit
Drake Fellows RHP

The strength of this draft is high school pitchers," a National League scouting director said. "There are a whole lot of general managers who don't want to take high school pitchers early, but you have to adjust to the talent that's out there. The guys who are better at the Draft are the guys who know that."

Heh, the Cubs first draft pick is lower than the number of prospects listed in that top 100 (Cubs' first pick is 104th).

And everyone is gonna take HS pitchers and we'll still end up with one of the best college bats with our first pick somehow

The Cubs total draft pool is $2,245,100. Unsurprisingly, that's the smallest pool in the draft.

3. $573,900
4. $429,790
5. $321,800
6. $241,000
7. $186,000
8. $173,800
9. $162,300
10. $156,600
