Not sure if they're saving money for a pick tomorrow or some of the guys today.

Guessing it was the latter moreso than the former. Gotta think Hatch has some leverage as a red-shirt sophomore. Hope I'm wrong.

It's a nice crop of arms considering the dynamics of this draft. I guess I'm expecting some college positional players today, guys to fill out the depth chart. Too lazy to check right now, but if Daniel Pinero hasn't gone, he might be an interesting guy to fit in.

Piniero went yesterday.

Encouraging projection for Mekkes from Fangraphs

314. Dakota Mekkes, RHP, Chicago (NL)

Proj. WAR thru age-27: 3.8

Mekkes is KATOH’s favorite player in the draft. You read that right: Mekkes receives the highest WAR forecast of any draft-eligible player for whom I have a projection. Mekkes carved up Big 10 hitters by striking out 96 batters in just 57 innings without surrendering a single homerun. Yes, he pitched exclusively in relief, but he averaged nine batters faced per appearance. He wasn’t a one-inning reliever like many other college relievers. I imagine the 6-foot-7 righty will move quickly through the Cubs’ system. I’m quite surprised Mekkes fell as far as he did.

Two RS SO in the top 10 will be interesting. Like TT and Cal were saying, it'll be interesting how they structure the offers. Miller in the 4th sounds like he's already accepted an offer. Perhaps an underslot for 5th round money?

20th is LHP Garrett Freeman of Alabama Tuscaloosa.

No HS picks in 20 rounds. Guess they truly are searching for quick movers. But holy horsefeathers, is the mound going to be crowded in Arizona and Boise.

Thought: Cubs have a large scouting staff, but they must have been able to really focus their time. Other teams have been scouting hitters; scouting high school players; scouting top-50 guys. Cubs didn't need to spend (waste?) any time on any of those three groups of players. Unfortunately.

But, you'd think that by spending all of their scouting resources on non-top-50 college pitchers, there should be no team in baseball better equipped to discriminate among that large group of arms.

He's 233 on BA's rankings. The HS is from Maddon's hometown.

Looks like older HSers (by that I mean one, so far) and JC guys

Cubs took a relatively high end HS RHP in the 34th. Davis Daniel, ranked 109 by BA and an Auburn commit. Based on the article I read, it seems his asking price is at least a million......He did pitch at Wrigley recently, at least, and loved it.

Yeah, sounds like it'll take 7 figures and I can't imagine the Cubs have that time of money available.
