Old Cubs Video Thread

I miss this man so much. June of 98 was one of the most unbelievable things I've seen watching baseball.

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

The Sosa hop is better than a bat flip.

I know Vasgersian was the Brewers announcer at the time, but man he was way more tolerable then than he is now.

That crowd is insane. I don't remember them being like that during the NLCS last year

Maybe had something to do with being down 2-0 and then getting completely blown out when down 3-0 and having next to nothing to cheer about in those games vs. a clip of a game tying homer in the bottom of the ninth and a blowout win in game two.

they need to get sammy back in the organization this year before they win the world series. he deserves to be involved in the run like the rest of the legends are

the sosa hop was actually something that i only noticed after he was gone from the cubs/baseball. it just seemed so natural i never noticed it. but it kind of feels surreal going back and watching it now and picking up on it. plus, he hit so many damn dongs that i'm sure it was just seemed second nature to see it.

i will forever love that man

not to mention TBS failed miserably at their attempt from a production standpoint

You didn't notice it when the media (including Chip Caray, iirc) was constantly mentioning it?

But yeah, I still love Sosa unapologetically. The man was pretty much the only reason to tune in to Cubs baseball for almost five years. Well, at least the thing that kept it from being completely depressing. That he's been effectively locked out is a crime.

People like my grandafther couldn't stop complaining about the hop all the damn time. And it just made me love it even more.

I mean I guess i noticed it on some level but maybe didn't appreciate how cool it was?

But no, I don't remember Chip Carey or people like mojo's grand dad or anyone else mentioning it/complaining about it. that's not to say they didn't - just that I didn't hear a ton about it. I also live halfway across the country from Chicago so it's not like I have tons of cubs fans or chicago media all around me. I was also younger then and now that I'm old and ish in my early 30's my memory sucks. I think that covers all my bases so far as excuses because I was starting to get piled on quick there.

You lucked out; tons of Cubs fans stupidly griped about him even when he was at his best. The hop, the camera love, the nonsense about how "he only hit home runs when it didn't matter/nobody on base/etc.," that he didn't care about winning and only about his own numbers. It was weird how many fans just out and out hated him pretty much the whole time he was with the team.

The hop was the best. My pre pitch routine was just like Sammy's, but my stance was like Soriano - even before he was a Cub. I always said if I ever hit a no-doubt HR I would do the hop. Unfortunately, I never hit one where I was confident enough it was gone to do the hop.

One of my friends bat flipped once on a ball that ended at least 50 feet short of a HR and was an easy fly out. He never heard the end of it. 10+ years later he still hears it.

i was always amazed at the hop because, for a long time, it was remarkably accurate. he would always know whether or not to do it, even if it was a basket shot or a fly ball caught in the ivy. then he got older and he started losing the feel.

i have literally only met one person in my whole life that hated on sosa openly to me. he was a guy i knew for about 2 months who sublet an apartment for a roommate of mine while I was in college. And he didn't like him because of the corked bat incident. we had lots of good arguments, come to think of it. i feel like everyone else either didn't care enough or they knew how much I loved him and the cubs and just didn't want to make an issue of it with me (if they actually didn't like him - i don't know).

There is so much stuff on Cubs Youtube these days. Not as much old stuff but tons of stuff from 2014 and 2015. Pretty much any decent Cubs power hitter has an "All 2015 HRs in order" video out there.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j2gkcyTvd8M&feature=youtu.be

But I wanted to post this one, extended replays of all the Cubs walkoffs last year. My favorite part about this (other than Strop running down the line with Bryant) is that at the beginning of the year, a lot of the walkoffs were bloops, bloopers and seeing eye singles. And then sometime around July the Cubs decided 'horsefeathers this we are just going to dong our way into walk off wins' and then every single walk off the rest of the year was on a dong.

2015 Walkoff standings:

Castro - 3
Denorfia - 2
Bryant - 2
Alcantara - 1
Russell - 1
Ross - 1
Montero - 1
SzczurMarte - 1
Coghlan - 1
