Technology Chit-Chat
I'm thinking of finally breaking down and getting one of those "learning" thermostats. Anyone have any experience or input on the nest or ecobee or others?

i bet cc has a thermostat that can hear the audio from his weekly viewing of avatar and instantly raises the temperature and humidity in his house so he feels like he's really in a rainforest.

It seems far more likely that he has a diabolical temperate system that allows him to heat the floor area so that people feel the need to take their shoes off.

i just want to point out that, entirely divorced from the context of this conversation, radiant heating is the horsefeathers

I bought my house in July with a Nest already installed. I can't say for sure if it's life changing or even a energy saver since my previous experience was an apartment where I just paid for electricity. Still it's neat and I'm sure would be better if I took the time to learn the system.

chrome is going to keep getting faster

The update contains a new data compression algorithm called Brotli, which Google first unveiled in September. It squishes the size of a website down by 26% more than Chrome's previous compression tool, Zopfli.

Circuit City might come back. I don't quite hate the idea of the new format.

I still don't see why they need a physical store for that though. I think it's doomed before it starts.

I suppose if you'really not tech savvy and/or don't want to take the time to research a product online. Go, ask the "expert" what you need and get the product a few days later. Also with the smaller footprint, it's probably all about maximizing exposure. You might normally buy stuff online but if they get foot traffic from mall shoppers maybe it works. As it is with Best Buys, they're always a separate trip, you don't just stumble upon it and buy something while you were out at the mall.

What Mac do you have? I have a Macbook Pro that has HDMI out, so pretty much any monitor(or TV for that matter) will do the trick.

sounded to me like he wants a hard drive
i'm pretty sure they would all work interchangeably as long as you format them properly (FAT).

The Cubs’ transaction list under Epstein and Hoyer reads like a work of fiction, a wish-fulfillment list composed in hindsight.

You know, when I first read the question I thought he was talking about a monitor too. But I reread it again and I think he's talking about an external hard drive.
I use Seagate with my mac and I'm pretty sure it will work with whatever. I don't know that you could transfer files from a PC to a Mac though.

ugh, I have been awake far too long already today
David is correct, the biggest thing is how you format the drive when you first use it.

One that you can use with a PC, and then remove and then use with a Mac? No, it doesn't. They use different file formats.

That's what I was afraid of. We have created this partnership with a local TV station, and for some reason they're being very anal about wanting to share large videos on hard drives instead of just letting me run over a flash drive. We all use macs and they all use PCs.

If it's large video files then it might be especially difficult. FAT32 works with both Windows and Mac, but the maximum individual file size is 4 GB.
