The only defense I could come up with for Joe is that maybe they told Strop to just stand up there and not swing, and Strop didn't listen? But that doesn't seem very Joe-like.

Regardless....DH please.

Bases were loaded, why not try to tack on more runs with seal boy? Strop already pitched 1.2 innings, he was only gonna come back for 1 batter anyway. But yes, maybe Joe said just keep the bat on your shoulders, agreed that doesn't sound like Joe at all.

I mean how likely is it really that he pulls a hamstring running 90 feet? I do get that it’s an unnecessary risk with Strop already having pitched 1.2 innings, but apparently Joe was going to have him close it out and go 2.2? Real glad we at least preserved the history and uniqueness of no DH in the NL though.

It looked like he pulled it landing on the bag, not just running

I was waiting for someone to blame that absurd decision to hit Strop on the DH rule.

No blame, but obviously a DH would've prevented the situation.

Already happened earlier in the thread. I personally don’t blame it on anything. Injuries happen. But it’s still dumb and annoying to not have the DH. And not just when our pitchers get hurt not pitching.

bat literally anybody there that can manage a flyball or dribbler or bunt or any one of a hundred other positive results to drive in the run and it becomes a super easy save situation anyway

Strop has never recorded more than 6 outs in a game, which makes the move more idiotic. Maddon has done a great job most of the time, but every so often he has to do something outlandish to try to uphold his "genius" status. Hopefully LaStella comes back strong after his day off.

He was at 21 pitches, it was a fine move to ride with him in the situation they were in. It was an absolute fluke injury, he should’ve been told not to swing. The issue isn’t leaving Pedro in and letting him bat, I take issue with like the dozen other decisions Joe made to lead to that situation coming up (Willy over Zobrist PH, Gore inexplicably in LF and getting an AB, pulling Monty so early, etc). The Pedro thing was the right call for the situation we had on our hands but to get to that situation Joe horsefeathers up.

yea, I dont have a problem with Maddon batting him, but he should have been on a strict "do nothing" leash. But its also very easy to say in the rearview mirror

Wrong.

21 pitches is not just 21 pitches when it is spread out across multiple innings. He had to warm up and come in the game, then pitch. Then he had to sit and wait, warm up again and pitch another inning. At this point he's done. He should not come back. But Joe tried to make him sit through another long inning, then planned on having him warm up and pitch again.

It was a stupid risk. They should have gone for the runs. They should not have risked their pitcher's arm by bringing him back for a third inning. That alone was reason enough to make the change, but bases loaded with 1 out is absolutely time to take him out.

LaStella was available. Which he’s a good option to hit there, Joe just went through every decent arm up to that point and we already had the lead I’m fine leaving Strop in to go for it. If he pulls Strop and Rosario, Maples, Mills, Kintzler, etc blow that game we’d be bitching about that too.

G1 of the NLDS would be on Thursday, October 4th, which would be three full weeks from when Pedro was hurt. Hopefully they win the division and buy him an extra few days of rest, so he could potentially make the NLDS roster.

i don’t even necessarily disagree with the idea behind it, but i think it’s absolutely true that part of the appeal of letting strop bat there is because of how fun it would be and how much the team would like it if he got the run in or even got a hit. joe likes to put his players in unique situations and the players like it too.

i have a lot more qualms with letting strop pitch another inning than i do with letting him take the at bat and trying to get a hit.

Moderate sounds more like a 4-6 week injury. I would just assume we won’t see him anymore and if he comes back great
