MLB's tampering rules say "there shall be no negotiations or dealings respecting employment, either present or prospective, between any player, coach or manager and any club other than the club with which [the player] is under contract or acceptance of terms,"

So is my hypothetical conversation a "negotiation" or a "dealing." Please help me.

A dealing.

I'll disagree, which now leaves us with another internet pissing match.

Except you are clearly mistaken. Any contact regardless of the hypothetical talk is tampering. Theo could literally say anything and it would be tampering if he contacted Maddon before he opted out.

how could that be true? if it were, it should be a slam dunk tampering case for the Rays

Theo: Oh man I just hate this humid weather, dont you Joe? I sure miss the Chicago fall weather....

Joe: Yup. (turns to Rays management) I quit

Rays MGMT: TAMPERING

pretty much in a hand basket, isn't it?

It's really difficult to prove

Yep. Basically unless Theo/Jed are complete morons, even if they did actually tamper, it was likely done through a face to face convo with Maddon's (Chicago-based) agent.

I hope you guys are right. I'm terrified the lack of a the Cardinal Horseshoe-Up-Our-Ass will spell a total disaster for Theo ending with us losing Soler & Bryant and having the Brain Trust suspended for the season when some pimply buser at some obscure Boys Town bar finds the terms of Joes new contract scribbled out on a napkin. On like October 15, 2014.

Thats who we are, after all.

i feel like the absolute, absolute worst case scenario is there are emails from theo to maddon that say HEY OPT OUT IF YOU WANT 5/25 and the league fines the cubs like 500k or something. zzzzzzzzz

Yeah I don't think anything will come of this. It seems like Theo purposefully went out of his way to make sure he wouldn't get caught, like a guy setting up an alibi for himself. Every time he gets asked about it, his answer is something like, "After joe opted out, his agent informed me of it. I didn't believe him, so I contacted the MLB offices to confirm it. Once it was confirmed, I then went ahead and began discussions." It is a little too perfect, but they probably covered themselves so nothing will be found out.

Even Maddon, when asked anything about the situation always goes to the line about how "he didn't even know he had the opt out until he got the call in his RV." Even when the question isn't exactly asking about that.

I love the idea that Maddon and Theo met at a gay bar. The imagery is awesome.

Ok, being hyperbolic can be funny sometimes, but let's be real... If tampering is found proven, we aren't giving up one of our starting Major Leaguers as compensation.

Tampa Bay couldn't afford him monetarily.

I'd love to see Martinez as bench coach for the Cubs.

I'd also like to see Sandberg flip his [expletive] about it.
