Nick Cafardo shot down internet reports the Red Sox increased their offer to Jon Lester. Cafardo reported Sox ownership met with Lester in Atlanta, not in Boston, and the Sox have not given Lester a deadline to either re-sign with them or they will move on. Lester is Boston’s top priority right now. And Ben Cherington continues to have conversations with other teams to acquire pitching. Buster Olney reported the consensus is the Sox will receive a good starter in return for Yoenis Cespedes.

The Cubs might be able to make Lester as comfortable as Boston according to Nick Cafardo. The Cubs are considered by some as Boston’s main competition for Lester, who “respects Joe Maddon very much and speaks highly of him.”

It appears the Red Sox and the Cubs are the only two teams that have made an offer to Lester. The Braves reportedly did not when they met with the southpaw.

The process should speed up once he’s had a chance to sit down with the Cardinals and Giants … that is until The Mystery Team pops up and throws the lefty a curveball.

Not saying the Red Sox aren't in a little bit better shape to contend immediately but it's kind of funny on Twitter how people are acting like we didn't just finish with a better record than them last season.

something comparable or better should easily be gotten using stupid Baez but we're annoyingly reticent to wash our hands of that headache

It's kind of alarming how much you hate Baez. Like you hate him so much it makes me like him more.

I'm right there with sneakyP

Yeah, I don't think Baez's value is "high" right now at all, certainly not comparable even to Shelby Miller. He's a giant question mark, with a decided lean to bust. That's not to say he will bust, but I certainly wouldn't give anything of value for him if I were a GM.

Bull [expletive]. His value isn't the highest it's ever been, but it's still high due to his age and his history of struggling. The same reasons the Cubs and Cubs fans can convince themselves that he'll be valuable is the reason GM's would want him.

I'm saying that I think that Baez has very little value right now. His MLB stint last year only seemed to validate every concern about him. Trading him now would be to trade him would be to sell him at the nadir of his value, I would think.

Maybe you're right, but I'm less optimistic. I think a GM could just as easily use his struggles as a reason to drive the cost down.

I don't think Baez is going anywhere, at least right now. No one is going to give much for him until they see him rebound from this latest struggle cycle.

Though the Miller thing was probably a bit much, though I don't think we're going to go out and land the top trade targets by using Baez as a centerpiece.

If he rebounds they know the Cubs would never trade him; this is a relative buy low situation for them. Yeah, the asking price/offers would be a bit lower than if his stint in the bigs had been less terrible, but the potential is still there and hugely tempting. Ask for returns where the key piece(s) are coming from a position of strength and you could still get a primo return for Baez.

IMO this offseason is basically the do or die time for the Cubs if they're seriously entertaining the idea of trading him at all.

Lowest value =\= low value

213 AB's at age 21 did very little (if any) damage to his top 5 prospect value. Prospects aren't expected to immediately adjust to major league pitching.

If he continues to falter next season, his value will begin dropping.

If he continues to falter next season, his value will begin dropping.

Yeah, I'm just feeling bitchy and cynical today.
