Re: CDC Info on COVID-19 (Corona virus)
More people are now hospitalized with COVID in the US than have been at any point so far. Less than a week after saying "oh crap, the 7-day rolling average hit 100k" it's already up to 130k.
Even the "good" governors have failed to learn the lesson that when you are dealing with exponential growth and lagging indicators, the time to take drastic action is when you think you might be heading toward a problem, not when you wait until you are sure you have one. Because by then, it's too late.
Even at our current lowered death rates, 140k today locks in at least 2500 deaths in a few weeks, probably more.

Re: CDC Info on COVID-19 (Corona virus)
The silver lining to the surges here and elsewhere is that it really seems to be pushing along the Phase III vaccine studies. The previous concern was that they were running out of countries/region where the the virus was flaring up on a big/long enough scale. Good preliminary news from the Moderna project and the Russian vaccine effort. It really is looking like we're going to have multiple vaccine options for use across the world. It's really not a stretch to look ahead to the spring (maybe even early spring) as when we can turn the corner on a global scale.

Luckily on Tuesday the Governor again relayed her strong belief in Iowans to do the right thing. I think it's gonna stick this time.

Which is why there are 7 Iowa cities on that list.

Re: CDC Info on COVID-19 (Corona virus)
Can any of the Iowans give me the tldr version of Reynold's political rise? I just don't get it.
After reading her wikipedia page, it appears that she doesn't really have any actual education or career. Then in her 40s she got a couple dui arrests, became a treasurer for a podunk county, less than two years in the iowa legislature, then suddenly she is the liutenant governor. And then only became the governor when her predecessor took a job in the trump administration. It blows my mind that somebody with no education, career, or skills goes from small county treasurer to governor in 8 years. Am I missing something?

I can only recall reading something a few years ago about her being Branstad's hand-picked successor. He apparently went out of his way to ensure the GOP machine in Iowa backed her fully. Sorry, not much help; totally unclear what she ever brought to the table other than GOP desire to have more women electeds.

I posted this in the Politics thread pre election, but Google the rise of Mike Huckabee sometime. He was a Baptist minister who squeaked into the Arkansas Lt Governor's office with no political experience, then rose to Governor in two years after Jim Guy Tucker went to prison in the Whitewater scandal. The rest is history, unfortunately.

I don't get it either. Here is all I know (some of which I may have made up)
- Former stripper
Somehow elected to state senate
Branstad liked her ... eyes
Became Lt. Gov.
Branstad was deported to China
Too many dumb rural people in Iowa voted to keep her

seems to me to be an obvious case of GOP saying "we need a girl," and her being the best/only choice. i see lots of suburban mom types thinking it's just amazing that republicans got the state's first female governor. but yes, she is a generic, unremarkable pile of nothingness.

Are we still doing over/unders on deaths? I don't think 400k is avoidable at this point.

There is no hope for Alabama. I'm just going to wait to get COVID, I guess. I was in a grocery story to grab some lunch and everyone was wearing masks except for the 4 cops who were there. We have a mask mandate in Alabama.

I mean, everyone but 4 cops wearing masks is pretty great.

didnt you poo-poo the idea of 200k at one point?
400,000 seems possible but hopefully if we really do get a vaccine to the most vulnerable by the end of jan we can avoid that

I blame the colleges. That was the tipping point.

I also think places that really didn’t get hit early on but still shut down to a decent degree (my state Wisconsin as an example) and then after the initial lockdowns of not really having it around people just let their guards down/didn’t take it serious and largely went to life and business as usual through summer where it still largely wasn’t around a ton but now has gone crazy the last 45-60 days since basically everything but mask wearing was thrown out as rules to follow.
My county was pretty much stuck around 40-70 cases at a time through spring/summer with not a lot of deaths or hospitalizations (there were some nursing home outbreaks and a church or two that made up a lot of the numbers, iirc). People didn’t see it affecting them or people they knew going back to doing things like going to bars/restaurants/whatever gatherings until relatively recently by me.
