Very good lay person explanation.

Frankly I'm not sure why the GOP wasn't smart enough to realize manipulating it in that way was smarter. Many/most people equate their refund as their tax bill.

For those that still want to rail on the bill, realize most tax bills are going down in the short term but that only the bills for the ultra wealthy and corporations are staying that way.

Admittedly, I'm not a tax expert, and my conservative friend posted this on Facebook. Who is wrong and who is right here?

Neither because neither saw the individual tax bill.

Actually Kamala is definitely right in a wholostic sense but this year to individual payers, it won't be felt yet by many/most.

My taxes are almost definitely going up this year, but I'm a weird case where I can itemize a lot of stuff. An increase in the standard deduction means nothing, and removal of some credits hurts me.

Both. Also, the Earned Income and Child Tax Credits are refundable and can create a negative effective tax rate. I really think anyone getting a giant refund this year is basically a poor welfare queen who also thinks “Taxation is Theft.”

My wife and I normally owe about $4000. This year we got a $6000 refund.

Standard deduction, no kids, rent instead of own. My wife got sick so that dropped us a bracket. The main culprit is that i kept my withholdings at the old rates.

That said, the tax bill didn’t solve any of the country’s problems unless you feel the rich are already overtaxed. I’d also pay more than $10000 a year to strip the toxic racism from the daily cultural discourse.

This is where I'm at, too. I don't mind paying taxes if I know the money is going to be well spent. I like having good schools (and teachers!) for my kids, good roads to drive on and regular garbage pickup. It's the thought that even a small fraction may be going to line the pockets of some spoiled horsefeathering trust fund brat that ticks me of.

I think you've keyed on a great way to measure casual racism. People who think because they haven't lynched anyone they aren't racist.

"How much extra in taxes would you pay per year to stop racism?"

The classic casual racist response will probably be something like "all the money in the world can't stop hate in this world, only people changing their hearts with the help of the lord".

SAVAGE:

It warms my shriveled heart to see, between this and her response to Trump hilariously calling for her to resign, how she's more than willing to not blink when she gets swarmed by everyone looking to take her down.

That was great. Also, not to spark a large debate here (about Israel/Palestine and middle east policy), but it's very unfair to call IIhan Omar an anti-semite for that remark. Yes, her comments weren't in the best taste, but her point about AIPAC and its influence in Washington is correct. Criticizing Israel (and Pro-Israel lobbying groups) is a very tricky subject in this country and I'm pissed how the left is reacting to this whole situation.

lol, I'm 99% sure I've been in that store. I wouldn't have guessed Nike was as big a percentage of the merchandise for a memorabilia-focused place like that one(and a mall store going out of business wouldn't really be news otherwise), but boy am I not sad to see those consequences.

As quite a few people recognized when the billionaire slush fund, err, I mean, the tax bill was passed, a ballooning deficit was a feature, not a bug as far as GOP'ers were concerned.

Oh, I think quite a few people (at least here) were predicting that the tax bill's bottom would fall out just in time for Democrats to win Congress and immediately be blamed for everything.

The stark difference in recollections is massive. Neo-cons from Frum to Max Boot are incredulous as to why Abrams was verbally spat upon by Omar.

I’m stunned the Chap Hills Mall still exists at all.
