Wrong.

21 pitches is not just 21 pitches when it is spread out across multiple innings. He had to warm up and come in the game, then pitch. Then he had to sit and wait, warm up again and pitch another inning. At this point he's done. He should not come back. But Joe tried to make him sit through another long inning, then planned on having him warm up and pitch again.

It was a stupid risk. They should have gone for the runs. They should not have risked their pitcher's arm by bringing him back for a third inning. That alone was reason enough to make the change, but bases loaded with 1 out is absolutely time to take him out.

You can't prove how much more wacky and clever you are if you do the obvious thing.

i don’t even necessarily disagree with the idea behind it, but i think it’s absolutely true that part of the appeal of letting strop bat there is because of how fun it would be and how much the team would like it if he got the run in or even got a hit. joe likes to put his players in unique situations and the players like it too.

i have a lot more qualms with letting strop pitch another inning than i do with letting him take the at bat and trying to get a hit.

yea. the sandwiched day game at DC with the threat of a hurricane w/o any decency from the MLB front office, I can see Maddon wanting to let them have some fun. And maybe Joe never intended him to pitch anymore.

Quit defending Maddon. He made a stupid baseball decision that could affect the rest of the season.

Schwarber batted against him today so I'd guess he's good to go or very close

Stephen Gryzlo’s job/contract with the team needs to be under serious review. Imo

Just gonna have to 05 White Sox the playoffs. Every starter goes 7-8 innings and we hand it off to Cishek and Chavez.

Don't we have the most playoff dongs in baseball the last 3 years?

That seems like a bit of an overreaction. I know nearly all of the innings came against the Reds and we really shouldn't be planning on Jorge de la Rosa shutting people down in the playoffs, but the Cubs bullpen hasn't even given up a run since Strop went down, in 8.2 IP. And I'm not sure if I'm ready to completely write Carl off just yet. He's had instances in the past of completely losing it and then reversing course and finding his groove again. And he has a 2.72 FIP and 2.39 ERA this year. Also, Justin Wilson has a 2.85 ERA this year. And Mike Montgomery will be added to the playoff bullpen, as well.

It's not what we hoped to see, for sure. And our bullpen is definitely now one of our weaknesses. But it's not quite "Our starter has to pitch 8 innings" bad.

I was being facetious really. I'm just loving what the rotation has been doing since we traded for Hamels. They really kicked into high gear.

99% chance Morrow would have recovered just fine if this thread had never happened.

I don't think anyone is completely writing off Carl; he's just unpredictable enough where he's a guy you have either think twice about using in a critical spot, or you have to have a really quick hook on him, and Joe doesn't seem to agree with either notions. I think pretty much everyone, however, would still agree he's a really valuable reliever.

Plus that Mills guy seems pretty good. Is he? I've mostly just been assuming that the bullpen is made up largely of a pile of department store mannequins that fell off of a truck.

If the Cubs do manage to win a World Series against Boston or Houston, this "team" has to be considered one of the best ever for what they've done after all the injuries.
