Just 15 months removed from signing a three-year, $38MM contract with the Cubs, righty Tyler Chatwood isn’t a lock to make their roster this season, Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune observes. Chatwood said Saturday he views himself as a starter, but he’s not a candidate for Chicago’s season-opening rotation if the quintet remains healthy, leaving him to fight for a long relief role. If he doesn’t win the job, the Cubs could try to trade Chatwood, but they’d have to eat a large chunk of the $25.5MM left on his contract in order to make that a realistic possibility, Gonzales notes.

This seems more guesswork than anything. He's looked good so far in ST, though.

It still the "offseason"?

The Cubs made a number of roster moves today, with promising righties Adbert Alzolay and Jen-Ho Tseng being optioned to Triple-A, while Justin Steele and Oscar De La Cruz were sent to Double-A, per the Athletic’s Patrick Mooney (Twitter links). Also on the move, Duncan Robinson, Ian Clarkin, Colin Rea, Ian Rice, Charcer Burks and Jacob Hannemann are being moved to minor league camp (Twitter link). Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune (via Twitter) adds Craig Brooks, Alberto Baldonado and Evan Marzilli to the list of players headed to minor league camp. The Cubs spring roster has now been cut to 54.
Rob Scahill, meanwhile, was released outright by the Cubs, per Mooney (via Twitter). Scahill has pitched at the big league level for parts of seven seasons running, topping out at 31 appearances in 2016 spread between Milwaukee and Pittsburgh. In total, the 32-year-old boasts a career 3.95 ERA (4.67 FIP) in 124 games for Rockies, Pirates, Brewers and White Sox.

With Scahill gone, that means we now have roughly 29 pitchers slated for the Iowa staff instead of 30!

Allegedly we offered Brian McCann more than what the Braves did (don’t know if that means more years or just money for this year) and were in on Maldonado but he wanted a job with more playing time (also since we’re poor we probably didn’t sweeten the offer enough).

Me two months ago would have taken that to mean that the meetings involved Ricketts saying that extra money would be available.

Me today knows that means that it's not out of the question if he'd sign for 1 million.

It would be hard to overstate how totally not happening that is.

Kimbrel is just sitting out there and ate Cubs aren’t going to budge. I seriously am questioning the Ricketts desire to win baseball games.

Dalton Pompey is probably available for not a whole lot.

Given what Maddon has said about there potentially being other moves this could maybe end up involving us. A reliever (Tony Watson?) or one of their second tier catchers could make sense.

I like Caratini but there's a number of decent backup catchers on the market now for cheap. Really hoping we pick one up.

How's Rosario looked this spring? Could he suffice as the other lefty in the pen until Cedeno is healthy?

Someone will have to explain the Sandy Leon fascination to me. Sure, good framer and defender, but almost impossibly inept with the bat. In short, like a dozen other reserve catchers out there. Personally I'd rather have Rene Rivera back.

I think the idea is that the gap between Leon and alternative backup C's offense is only a handful of runs over the 200-250 PA they would expect him to get. If you think there's a similar profile(Rivera could definitely be that) I don't know too many Leon Or Bust enthusiasts, but he seems to have the defense/experience that might actually prompt Maddon to play him and make sure Contreras doesn't wear down again, and he's definitely available.

the implication here is that the cubs are so poor, they can't even afford a 46 year old former catcher (who wasn't even good when he was young). it's just a really solid joke
