Saturday: https://www.thecubreporter.com/05112019 ... -riverview

RHP Erich Uelmen (on Myrtle Beach 7-day IL) got the start for the Cubs and worked 3.1 IP (61 pitches - 69% strikes), allowing one run on three hits (two singles and a double). He didn't issue any walks, he struck out four (three swinging), and he induced the A's hitters who did make contact to repeatedly pound his pitches into the ground (6/0 GO/AO).

Today: https://www.thecubreporter.com/05132019 ... end-dbacks

Prior to the game on Field #5, RHP Keegan Thompson (on AA Tennessee 7-day IL since April 11th) threw "live" BP on Field #6.

2. Brennen Davis, RF: 1-4 (K, F-7, HR, L-8, R, RBI)
4. Fabian Pertuz, 3B: 1-3 (3B, K, BB, P-4, R, CS)
6. Luis Verdugo, SS: 0-2 (F-9, BB, F-9, R)

When was the last time the Cubs had a better trio of starting pitching prospects than Marquez, Miller and Abbott?

I'm not saying they're great, just that the Cubs minor league pitching has been bad for so long I can't remember the last time they've had 3 starting pitching prospects equally as good...

That's good news on Thompson, Navin. Any idea what his injury was/is?

McNutt, Maples, and Cashner during Summer 2011

——

Ademan finished 2/4 with a walk and K to go with the HR...It’d be pretty badass if he maintained into the summer, maybe/hopefully dropping down to 18-20% on the K rate while keeping the Isos, saw some AA this year, and then kept hitting

McNutt, Maples, and Cashner

That's a pretty good trio for comparison. I can't think of a better one right now. The problem is they weren't all good at the same time.

Cashner was a high draft pick (late 1st rounder) and put up good numbers for the Cubs in the minors but was traded before Maples put up good numbers. McNutt had a dominant start to his career with an excellent first 128 innings in his 1st two seasons, but he lacked the pedigree as a 32nd round pick and fell off in 2011, again before Maples was good. Also, Maples didn't really put up good numbers like Marquez, Miller and Abbott until 2017 after he became a reliever.

Still, if we are going just by touted potential, that would qualify.

Interesting side note: Trey McNutt is back in the minors this season after not pitching since 2016. At age 29, he's a reliever in the A's organization at the AA level.

One knock on Ademan’s season is way too many popups. If he can get that down some 14-15+% that could a long way, and he’d be dropping to a career worst or close even then. Otherwise it seems he is getting the ball into the air with some authority and he’s been racking up multi-hit games over the past month.

If he can get his periphs in order with fewer Ks and popups enough to sneak into AA and hold his own for 180-200 PAs there, then we might be in for two major bat breakouts in AA next year (Amaya!) should no one be traded.

——

I’m getting my hopes up for Alzolay. Come time for the callup this year, health willing, he will have a nice bunch of advantages as a power arm nobody’s seen behind a top offense on a roster that doesn’t really throw hard or many 4 seams...It’s a pretty sweet set up for him or whoever he may get traded for, whatever the role too

He's been out so long, I keep forgetting about Alzolay. We have to wait and see how he performs in AAA, but maybe the question is when was the last time the Cubs had a quartet of pitching prospects as good as Marquez, Miller, Abbott and Alzolay...

AZ Phil doesn't know either:

K-DUB: I don't know what Keegan Thompson's injury was, and Yovanny Cruz was shut-down at the end of Minor League Camp because he was fully-stretched-out to five innings and 75-80 pitches with the South Bend squad and the Cubs wanted to go back to square-one with him since he won't be pitching at Eugene until mid-June. (They did the same thing with Eduarniel Nunez). But I don't know why Cruz hasn't been pitching in EXST games.
