I started listening to the Smokies broadcast for Lange's outing, stayed for the comedy. The Smokies are pretty bad and frustrated. First and second no out in the first, the lineup put up zero runs. Then in the 4 run and 8 batter opponent's second some guy steals home on a double steal, the Smokies bench starts arguing with the ump, and then one of the OFs drops a ball he had in his glove...Lange's day started out pretty fun. He used fastballs to K Adell and throw a clean first, got some swings and misses on the change in the second maybe got squeezed on a couple two strike fastballs in

Hoerner's SS defense does not sound like a positive. A couple of off line throws - though both outs, adventurous - and an error so far. The announcers heap praise on his bat but they keep quiet on the defense beyond calling the play. He just missed a grounder (immediately after the error) they called a double play ball off the bat from Adell, turns it into a 1st and 3rd with no outs in the 5th

A couple batters and a HR later in the 5th and it's 7-0, yeesh. Next batter doubles, no one warming up so there's that

Lange's out for the 6th, just walked his first batter. I like that he was sent out to pitch. 7 runs is 7 runs but he hasn't been bad, not even alot of hard contact (hardest hit ball was probably the double after the HR).

Lange gets pulled at 100 pitches, 5 IP / 1 HR / 6 Ks / 2 BBs behind the 7 runs. Not a straightforward outing, he pitched way better than 7 runs though it is still 7 runs. I liked how he bounced back after the second inning with 6 straight outs, including striking out the side in the 4th. Lots of swings and misses and fastballs getting taken late in the count, sounded like a couple near misses were among the issues Smokies had with the umps

Smokies are a pretty sloppy team and the team's top prospect, Hoerner, was a big part of it. His error and inability to get to Adell's groundball put two on and no one out in the 5th. More disappointing were short PAs ending in groundballs, including the first with 2 on, a theme for the lineup.

The announcers did alot of commenting on the Smokies' struggles and clear frustration today. They really fell apart after making their first out on offense, haven't threatened since. Plenty of summer and baseball left, something like 48 games!

It wouldn’t have taken a lot but Tyson Miller was much better in his second Iowa start

5 innings 3 hits 2 earned 3bb and 5k on 88 pitches

Lange with the nice magic trick tonight of giving up 7 unearned runs lowering his ERA to under 3.

Marginal pitcher getting by on smoke, mirrors, and bad defense.

Sucks that all 3 of 17 year old Richard Gallardo ER came off a 3-run HR with 2 outs to 35 year old MLB vet Nick Hundley.

The good news is that Jake Reindl finally made his professional debut. He got rehabbing Top-100 prospect Sean Murphy to ground out a pair of K's but one reached on the ball getting away from the catcher then a another ground out to end his inning.

What is Lange's stuff nowadays?

Just a couple years ago he was a 1st round pick in the college WS with a solid fastball, a great curve ball and a developing change up. He didn't get hurt, I don't know why his stuff backtracked?

I remember talk about him being a better reliever because of his max effort on pitches, but that transition hasn't happened.

There's no reason for him not to be. You currently have non-prospects(like Daniel) playing 2b beyond High-A.

I'm all for Slaughter going as well with Reynolds sinking or swimming at High A.

You have older Of'ers in Eugene as well but...

Low 90s FB, limited sign of the breaking ball that got into the 1st and a better change.

Without his curve, he's a marginal pitcher and more likely minor league depth than a prospect,IMO.

Thanks for the info... Good stuff.

There is still some legitimate hope for Lang. With Little doing well, maybe the 2017 draft wont end up a disaster.
