Almost more excited for Davis' season than the Cubs' season.

This was pretty interesting in AZPhil's update:

Several players & coaches from the Lotte Giants (KBO) are attending Instructs as guests of the Cubs, but it's possible that one or more of the Korean players could end up being acquired by the Cubs at some point. (Ex-Cubs minor league OF, coach, and scout Min-Kyu Sung was hired as GM of the Giants last September).

The Giants were the worst team in the KBO last year but have this guy for The Future:

Kind of crazy that Mitchell and Galindo are still around, and that it was 5-6 years since adding them. Galindo has been touted as a power guy for some time; he's yet to hit 10 HR in a season. A little note in a CubReporter observation doesn't mean much, for sure. But a little discouraging when outstanding guys are journeyman A-ballers.

After reading MLB's list yesterday I'm really curious to see how the rotations play out in the lower levels:

- Do any of Cruz/Gallardo/Estrada open the year in SB?
- Do any of Jensen/McAvene/Clarke open the year in MB?
- Whither Jose Albertos?
- Was 5 dominant starts enough to show that Brailyn is too good for High A?

I feel like the position player group is fairly set save for the guys on the Eugene/South Bend bubble like Verdugo, but there's a lot of possibilities on the SP side.

I’m very interested in the pitching placements. I do wonder if they’re a bit more aggressive with Marquez.
Unfortunately Jeremiah Estrada had TJS surgery last August.

I think Gallardo's best chance at meaningful South Bend innings this year is to wait for injuries or promotion in May/June and get bumped up from Extended ST. For both him and Cruz, I think it really depends on where last year's college picks start.

"Minor league baseball team cancels 'OJ Trial Night' following backlash"

The trial of the century gets a juicy new spin. We will finally receive the verdict that everyone has been waiting for … pulp or no pulp?.

Fans will act as our jury, voting with custom paddles to reach verdicts on various topics throughout the night. The eyes of the nation will be upon us. Fans will receive an "OJ Trial" shirt upon entering the stadium. If the shirt don't fit, you must … see if we have a different size.

Nonsense, full homer possible 2021 offseason/preseason top 10:

1 - Ryan Jensen RHSP - After dominating High A hitters for 80 innings heading into July and then repeating for a 35 inning stretch in AA, the Cubs give him a callup

2 - Miguel Amaya C - Another player who sneaks a debut in after hitting as hoped in AA

3 - Aramis Ademan SS - Another one who sneaks a cup o'coffee in after a breakout in AA, still a work in progress as his breakout is more .280/.350/.430 than something crazy plus good defense and baserunning

4 - Cole Roederer CF - Manages to mash at MB, stick in CF, and sees some AA

5 - Richard Gallardo RHSP - Puts together 80 strong innings between the full season A balls, hits 97 with command of two plus offspeeds

6 - Mick Abel RHSP - First round pick

7 - Cristian Hernandez SS - Top IFA

8 - Andrew Abbott LHRP - Another late season callup! Sneaks onto the postseason roster! Second round pick!

9 - Dax Fulton LHP - 3rd round pick! TJ'd HS lefty with spins

10 - Ronnier Quintero C - Basically does a Paredes and takes some MWL PAs off a clean AZL showing at 17

Hot takes on this thing I just made up:

- I guess I'm doing this Ademan thing

- If you're wondering why no Davis or Marquez, they were imaginarily used in an imaginary Lindor trade along with Hoerner that also nets Triston McKenzie which I just thought of now so he is not ranked

- If you're wondering why so many cup o'coffees it's because money and a more aggressive promotion philosophy plus luck and maybe some bad luck hopefuly not too much

- Cory Abbott also debuts, is a good fifth starter

- New draft guy's draft picks make the top 10, I wanted to sneak a bat in like Trei Cruz

So this was like a...bold predictions thing(??) and also there's no baseball for a while

Some quality 2019 seasons that didn't get much notice:

Chris Kachmar RHP - Really quietly put up 120 IP / 8 HRs / 130 Ks / 93 hits between NCAA (Lipscomb), Rk, and NWL, possible high spin guy with multiple offspeeds from the same school as new MiL pitching coordinator guy and Jeff Passantno. Was with MB during MiL camp

Joe Nahas RHP - Didn't allow a HR in 33.2 IP between CCBL, Rk, and NWL, struck out 47 and only allow 26 Hs

Josue Huma IF - Just turned 20 switch hitting IF put up a .360 OBP and more walks than Ks in the NWL, played SS/2B/3B and might have been playing full season ball in April as SB's 3B if Morel moved to MB

Cam Sanders RHP - Compared to Thompson during the regular seaon he threw more innings, allowed fewer HRs, allowed fewer hits, fewer XBHs...

Darius Hill CF - 4 year starter graduated at 21 while hitting .315/.376/.521 during his senior season....Took PAs with SB during his debut. Not not a prospect and seems like a hugh quality org player

Also just noticed that Luis Vazquez was with the Smokies for MiL camp, so the full season SS rundown could have been: Short, Ademan, Vazquez, and Verdugo....Boooo 2020

5 pitchers other than Marquez who finished strong last year:

Cory Abbott - Ran a .98 ERA with 50 Ks / 9 BBs / 13 Hs / 2 HRs over his final 36.1 IP / 6 starts in AA

Ethan Roberts - 23/2 K:BB in his final 21 IP with MB, like Abbott he's all cutters and curves and sliders

Richard Gallardo - 17/5 K:BB with a 2.49 ERA over his final 21.1 IP at 17 btw the AZL and NWL, most impressive due to ARL

Manuel Espinoza - Spent all year in the AZL at 18 and was pretty damn good, finished with a 21/3 K:BB in his final 25.1 IP and the only HR he allowed all year. Doesn't look amazing but the AZL was wild most of the season, tough assignment for an 18 YO

James Norwood - Allowed a .348 SLG and 4 HRs in his final 37.2 IP with 56(!) Ks and just 26 Hs allowed between the juiced up AAA and MLs

Bonus: Carlos Ocampo - The legendary RH finished with 28:7 K:BB in 23 IP, allowed a .256 SLG during that span. All in the AZL almost a half decade after signing so, maybe he turns into a less crazy Maples down the road? Definitely stay stuned

5 hitters who did the same:

PJ Higgins - Hit .301/.364/.464 with a <20% K rate over his final 240 PAs between AA and AAA

Miguel Amaya - His .278/.380/.481 over his final 158 PAs including just a 13% K rate

Luis Verudgo - Hit .395/.439/.697(!) in August (82 PAs with a <20% K rate)

Edmond Americaan - LHH posted .348/.417/.620 over his final 104 PAs in the NWL

Nelson Velazquez - Got hurt or demoted to the AZL, tore it up, went back to the MWL, and posted .301/.365/.495 over his final 115 PAs and dropped his K rate to 25% v 27% in the 157 MWL PAs prior.

Bonus: Yohendrick Pinango - Another legendary IFA signing hit .411 over his final 104 PAs with more walks (8) than Ks (7)

Cole Roederer's finish was less flashy than Amaya's and others, but sneaky good otherwise

Cool interview with Brennen Davis, that portion starts maybe 14 minutes in...Davis did a good job probably....Rizzo talked to instructional league hitters in 2018 about 2 strike approach...He's comfortable going away and hates to strikeout, expects coaches and strength will only add power and make his swing more efficient...Says the Cubs basically just let him play after the draft, didn't try to change anything so that really strong debut was all him....Will build his body to whatever the Cubs want, CF or COF, hopes to find middle ground...Mentioned something about how as a prospect he has to fill the need for the org...Other stuff

I've been wondering about this. I wonder if crowd sizes might be small enough that this is reasonable by the summer even if MLB isn't? And if not, do we see some sort of late/extended AFL or Instructional league?
