I find that I haven’t been following sports much at all since the loss of Deadspin. Is there anyone out there with that same kind of snarky, opinionated, political outlook? Or do I just need to follow a bunch of people on Twitter?

Probably just follow Drew Magary on Twitter and let the algorithm do its work.

Definitely less political in nature, but I also find Katie Nolan a solid "irreverent sports takes" twitter follow, who has no association to deadspin.

I've known about this for awhile and there were problems between Keith Law and his bosses at ESPN. They didn't like how outspoken he was on his twitter account and he did all his chats on a separate website (ESPN doesn't even do chats anymore). From his first article:

One of the many other reasons I came to The Athletic was the chance to write about labor issues in baseball, which will only become a more important topic as we head toward the next CBA negotiations, and as Major League Baseball’s proposal to realign and consolidate the minor leagues continues to attract unhelpful attention from various presidential candidates. Minor-league players are underpaid and often asked to work in suboptimal conditions, but they lack the protections of a union to give them a voice in any negotiations — and neither MLB nor the minor-league owners speak on behalf of those players. I hope to cover all of those negotiations, and the increasingly public nature of the battle, in a way that considers all of the stakeholders, whether or not they have an actual seat at the bargaining table.

This is a great move overall and another good reason to get a subscription.

Definitely excited to see him move over, and it's great to see he's planning on focusing on the labor side. Will be interesting to see how objective the Athletic stays as they get bigger and bigger. Obviously there won't be a TV contract getting in the way. He's a pretty good twitter follow too for his views outside of baseball, even if he does get a little soapbox-y at times (and that's not mentioning the monthly live streams of him doing acoustic guitar covers).

Imagine thinking it makes any kind of sense to acquire a media group, and then nuke the news/politics outlet and the sports outlet in short order. It's weirdly impressive.

Even though they're obviously just stripping it for parts in that distinctly horrible venture capitalist way, it's still extra gross and incompetent this time.
