CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today placed right-handed pitcher Ryan Dempster on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to June 23, with a left oblique strain. In corresponding roster moves, right-handed pitcher
Billy Petrick, a native of Kankakee, Ill., has been selected from Double-A Tennessee and right-handed pitcher Wade Miller has been transferred to the 60-day disabled list.
Petrick, 23, was originally selected by Chicago in the third round of the 2002 draft and has compiled a 25-21 record with a 3.65 ERA (152 ER/374.1 IP) in 89 minor league games (63 starts). A 2002 graduate of Morris (Ill.) High School, the switch-hitting Petrick was named to the 2004 Midwest League All-Star team.
This season, Petrick has gone 1-2 with a 2.57 ERA (12 ER/42.0 IP) and two saves in 24 relief appearances between Single-A Daytona and Double-A Tennessee. He began the year with Daytona, producing a 3.09 ERA (4 ER/11.2 IP) in six relief outings before he was promoted to Tennessee in late April.
With the Smokies this season, Petrick has gone 1-1 with two saves and 2.37 ERA (8 ER/30.1 IP) in 18 games and has not allowed an earned run in his last seven outings dating to June 4 (12.1 IP). He has limited hitters to a .202 batting average and struck out 33 compared to eight walks.
Petrick, who is looking to make his major league debut, will wear number 56 and is available for tonight’s 7:05 p.m. CT game against the Colorado Rockies at Wrigley Field.
Dempster, 30, is 1-3 with a 3.38 ERA (13 ER/34.2 IP) and 16 saves in 33 games for Chicago this season. He has held the opposition to a .178 batting average (21-for-118) in 34.2 innings of work and has converted 88.9-percent of his save opportunities (16-of-18) this season.
Miller, 30, originally landed on the 15-day disabled list April 23 with middle back spasms. He is 0-1 with a 10.54 ERA (16 ER/13.2 IP) in three starts with Chicago this season.CUBS ACTIVATE ARAMIS RAMIREZ FROM DISABLED LIST - 2007-06-22right-hander sean gallagher optioned after yesterday’s game
CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today activated infielder Aramis Ramirez from the 15-day disabled list after the club optioned right-handed pitcher Sean Gallagher to Triple-A Iowa following yesterday’s game against the Rangers in Texas.
Ramirez, who turns 29 on June 25, is hitting .299 (63-for-211) with a team-leading 13 home runs while his 39 RBI are tied with Derrek Lee for the club high. The third baseman injured his left knee running to first base in the second inning June 6 at Milwaukee and was placed on the disabled list June 11 (retroactive to June 7) with left patellar tendinitis.
Acquired by Chicago from Pittsburgh in July of 2003, Ramirez has amassed a .298 batting average (610-for-2047) with 133 home runs and 392 RBI in 541 games with the Cubs.
Gallagher, 21, posted a 9.53 ERA (6 ER/5.2 IP) in three relief appearances for Chicago after he was selected by the club from Double-A Tennessee June 6. He has gone 33-14 in 76 career minor league contests (75 starts) – including a 7-2 mark with a 3.39 ERA (23 ER/61.0 IP) in 11 starts this season at Tennessee.CHICAGO CUBS acquire catcher rob bowen and minor league outfielder kyler burke f - 2007-06-20Cubs Send Catcher Michael Barrett and Cash to the Padres
CHICAGO – The Chicago Cubs today acquired catcher Rob Bowen and minor league outfielder Kyler Burke from the San Diego Padres for catcher Michael Barrett and cash.
Bowen is traveling to Arlington, Texas today and is expected to be in uniform for the Cubs for tonight’s contest against the Rangers at 7:35 p.m. CT.
The 26-year-old Bowen is batting .268 with eight doubles, two home runs and 11 RBI in 30 games for the Padres this season. A switch-hitter, Bowen’s 13 walks have contributed to a .371 on-base percentage, 103 points higher than his batting average, and he has already set a career high in doubles, helping to a .439 slugging percentage.
Bowen has batted .310 (18-for-58) with seven doubles, two homers and a .431 on-base percentage in his last 21 games after batting .167 with no homers and one RBI in his first nine games through April 19. He is batting .350 (7-for-20) with a .480 on-base percentage vs. left-handed pitching.
Behind the plate, Bowen has turned in a 3.46 ERA (80 ER/208.0 IP) in 26 contests, with San Diego posting a 16-10 record (.615 winning percentage) in those games.
The six-foot-three, 225-pound Bowen has played parts of four big league seasons with Minnesota (2003-04) and San Diego (2006-07) after being selected by the Twins in the second round of the 1999 Draft.
Kyler Burke, 19, was selected by the Padres in the supplemental round of the 2006 Draft (35th overall) out of Ooltewah High School in Tennessee, where the six-foot-three, 205-pounder batted .459 (51-for-111) with 20 homers, 58 RBI and 49 walks in 45 games as a senior in 2006.
In 2007, the left-handed batter and thrower began his first full professional campaign with the Single-A Fort Wayne Wizards, where he was batting .211 with seven doubles, one triple, one home run, 21 RBI and a .305 on-base percentage in 62 games.
Barrett batted .256 with nine homers and 29 RBI in 57 games for the Cubs this season. Acquired by Chicago from Oakland for a player to be named on December 16, 2003, Barrett hit .274 with 67 home runs and 238 RBI in 501 games in a Cubs uniform. He was signed through the end of the 2007 season.

Well, now I have to write my second article of the day!
The big news is that Aramis Ramirez has re-signed with the Cubs, along with Kerry Wood. Reports are that both signed very team-friendly deals. Current reports have Aramis accepting a 5/$70M deal with a mutual option for a sixth year and Wood taking a one year deal with a low base and lots of incentives. These moves have definitely put the Cubs in a better position for 2007. Let’s take a look at where things stand and what work remains to be done. But first I want to comment quickly on re-signing Aramis.
I have very mixed feelings about the signing. There’s no question that we are in a much better position to compete in 2007 and 2008 with him than without him. That is particularly true since he seems to have signed a much below market deal. I will be enthusiastic about this deal if he did not receive a full no trade clause with the contract. In which case, I will love the production from him for the first few years of the deal and then suggest trading him before he declines. I am very glad that the Cubs did not have to do a six or seven year deal at more than $15M per year to get this done, though.

With the news that the Cubs exclusive negotiating period with Aramis Ramirez has passed without him being resigned by the team, many Cubs fans are feeling that the sky just fell. I’m going to change the argument a bit. I think the Cubs are doing the right thing by not signing Ramirez to a long term contract. Before people start thinking that this article is going to be an exercise in apologizing for management, though, let me say that the article will also be an indictment of the team’s ability to plan effectively.
