Not that errors say much but I was surprised to see Cristian Hernandez made his 18th today

HR #2 for Ballesteros, #5 for Brayan Altuve starting at 1B. I’m a fan of gathering this group of 4 LHH Cs holding up and showing various skills and potential. Quintero’s still the jewel but Ballesteros’ debut is one of the more pleasant surprises on the farm this year

Michael McAvene's starting for the ACL Cubs

MB saw 24th overall pick Ryan Cusick, probably the hardest throwing SP prospect in the 2021 draft, and didn't do so good. 10 Ks, a few hits, and a walk in 4 IP

Canario hit HR #9

Herz struck out 9 and walked 2 over 5. He closes out his year with 81.2 IP and some reliever-y periphs (43 BBs, 131 Ks, 7 HRs, just 42 Hs), but that may just be the fallback option for a healthy, athletic lefty with some good arm strength and a couple new offspeeds. I might be pro opening in the Tennessee rotation next year, it's not a big offensive environment. He allowed only one unearned run all season

Ryan Jensen had a good last start of the year. Didn't miss a ton of bats, but got a ton of grounders. I'm not going to do the napkin math, but he's probably ended his AA cup of coffee with a groundballs rate north of 60%.

A few weeks ago I wrote:I'm finding myself interested in the timing of promotions for some guys that have hit the ground running at their new level.

Nelson Velazquez was promoted during a cold streak, he hit .148 and struck out 44% of the time the week leading up to his promotion, and absolutely exploded on getting to AA

Yohendrick Pinango was ICE cold for over a month, got hot for a week and then got the bump to A+, and has been raking since

Alexander Canario hit .227 and K'd 39% the week leading up to the trade. Again the Cubs promote him and he absolutely goes off

I understand that there are non box score reasons for promotions, and that we publicly are using stat lines as proxies. There's all sorts of things like bat path and attack angle and such that we'll never know. But you'd think for a hitter that positive developments in "hidden" areas would manifest in positive developments in the box score. So like you'd expect good production with bad metrics to withhold a promotion, but it's interesting to see bad production with (presumably) good metrics lead to a promotion and IMMEDIATELY follow with good production at a harder level.

Like it's unequivocally good. It really speaks to the thought that the Cubs do get player dev, but it's kind of wild to watch from the outside.

Really feels like there's something here

Velasquez had a really nice night also. Will never post a great BBK but he's sitting right under a 1.0 OPS in AA, surely opening some eyes.

Have a game, James Triantos! 4 for 4 with 2 2Bs and 2 BBs.
