MB also has Espinoza, Albertos, Laskey, Thorensen, Nahas, and Carlos Ocampo on the pitching staff, might find an interesting arm or two out of that group. Overall it’s a pretty loaded roster

Eric Patterson is the asst hitting coach for SB. Chris Kachnar’s a sleeper on that pitching staff. Carraway’s (21) the youngest player on that roster. This isn’t the final roster. Weird to not see McAvene or Clark on either roster?

Oh and Luis Vazquez got the SB SS job, nice. Josue Huma is in the IF mix at MB. Huma and Ryan Reynolds switch hit and can play multiple IF spots off the MB bench

Kohl Franklin is the big omission for me. Hope he’s not hurt.

Sounds like we’ll have to wait a few more days for Brennen Davis too:

Carraway being at SB is kind of disappointing. It's probably not fair, but kind of like Strumpf I'd seen him penciled into AA, so now that he's at the (still very much appropriate) High A it's a bit of a bummer.

Why? High A seems almost standard for a top college arm in his debut season

I'm not worried about Marquez. He was off screen until he wasn't last year too, Dorey outright said he thinks Marquez can make a big impact on the ML roster this year. He also seemed plenty active and healthy at MiL ST not even a couple weeks ago:

So these are the pitchers who weren't on a roster today and reasonably should have been:

Tyson Miller
Brailyn Márquez - still getting ramped up
Jack Patterson
Brendon Little
Kohl Franklin
Riley Thompson - injured in his last start in Arizona
Chris Clarke
Michael McAvene
Hunter Bigge
Josh Burgmann
Luke Little
Yovanny Cruz

I guess you could include Benjamin Rodríguez and Jeremiah Estrada on that list too. Hopefully most of these guys are just slowly getting ramped up (especially after the weird season last year) and aren't injured.

I would not be too concerned about Marquez. I heard he’s behind schedule mostly due to COVID precaution delays and an abbreviated spring camp. Sounds like he’ll be in Tennessee soon.

Patterson isn't pitching this year. Looks like he had surgery and tweeted he'll see us in 2022.

As suspected, Franklin and Márquez are healthy:

But some alarm bells went off for fans eager to see where Márquez and Franklin would start the season when neither popped up on a minor-league roster.

Both are currently healthy but were delayed by the intake process at the start of minor-league camp. With so many uncontrollable variables for prospects to deal with over the last year — access to resources, training environments, continuity of ramp-ups — the Cubs were extra cautious after any delays or extended downtimes for their pitchers.

With Márquez specifically, the organization noticed last year that he’s someone who benefits from working with the high-performance team during his ramp-up. Márquez has a high-maintenance delivery and extreme velocity, and benefits from an aggressive long-toss routine.

The stuff in there about Ed Howard and Cam Sanders sounds fun too.

Later in Spring camp, Sanders was holding velocity and stuff for five innings. Bain was similarly impressive but stuff started to fall off in the third. I’m paraphrasing, but a Cubs exec believes they’ve struck gold on those guys and thinks they’re Top 10 organizational prospects at the end of this season. Also I know AZ Phil mentioned Gallardo relieving, but it didn’t sound like that was in the long-term plans.

Thanks. Sanders had a good season two summers back, but he's always been super wild. Will be interesting to see how his command and control hold up.

That's a LOT of missing names. I wonder how many are injured, versus slow ramp-up, versus just not considered developmentally ready for full-season ball?

It may be that with the renewed emphasis on velocity, that injuries will proliferate accordingly?

Or I wonder if having guys hands-on in camp, that pitch-lab guys who are reconfiguring some of their pitches, that they've decided extra time with coaches in camp is developmentally more valuable than facing full-season batters?

Would be a good question for Dorey or Cubs exec on case by case:

On the shelf

Right-hander Kohl Franklin, one of the Cubs' top pitching prospects, isn't hurt but is catching up in extended Spring Training after getting delayed by coronavirus intake protocols. Righties Riley Thompson, Chris Clarke and Michael McAvene and left-hander Brendon Little all had minor ailments in the spring and are finishing building up arm strength in extended Spring Training.
