i haven't been to a krispy kreme store in probably 15 years (mainly because all the ones i knew of anywhere around me closed down), but didn't they always hand out free "samples" if you were in the store or am i crazy?

i remember getting free doughnuts fresh off the machine when i was in line many times.

Second shot is in!

Feeling like I’m playing Russian roulette waiting to see which side effects pop up.

20 hours in... aside from a minor headache and sore arm at the injection site, all is good.

I feel like one of the lucky ones!

Nationally, very plateaued. We stalled just above reaching previous record lows about a week or two ago.

It's pretty regional. Michigan is trending up, most places are fairly level, west coast is still improving rapidly.

This is right about when variants were supposed to hit their peak impact, so we look to be in good position to weather it and start declining again soon.

Probably not
If this horsefeathers up country wants to get to 85%, Cabela's should offer free ammo.

What's the general thought process behind Illinois (and Chicago specifically) being so slow to open up the vaccine to younger ages? Or is it actually not that slow compared to all 50 states and I'm just getting pissed every time I see an individual state announce they're opening it up.

Chicago is being specifically weird about it. All of Illinois, outside of Chicago, age 16 and up is eligible starting April 12. If you're referring to younger than 16, the vaccines haven't been approved for them at all anywhere as far as I'm aware.

It’s not like vaccine appointments are going unclaimed due to lack of eligible people. No reason to expand when you’re nowhere near complete with the current phase of higher risk individuals.

No, wasn't talking about younger than 16. I know the rest of IL is April 12, but even that seems pretty delayed compared to seeing all these announcements about how it's open currently or opening next week or whatever. Like I said above, I may have just seen the quarter of states of are open/close to open and assumed we were way behind everyone. But May 31 for Chicago is absurd.

It's really different state to state. I have a friend in Boston who is 55 and isn't qualified yet. I know a 60+ year old guy in Seattle who can't get one. In the meantime, my 18 year old daughter is scheduled for one next week

IMO it's like 60% Chicago trying to be good about distributing these things equitably, and 40% Lightfoot being a horsefeathers.

Illinois remains one of the few large states doing a better job of distributing available vaccine. Presumably that means there's been high demand from eligible participants. Quite a few states doing a poorer job distributing may be due to lesser demand by those that were eligible earlier. If a 60 year old MAGA head in Ohio isn't going to take it, it's a lot easier to start opening up to 20 year olds. Minority communities have taken a much higher toll from the virus and have had a tougher time gaining access to the vaccine. Chicago is obviously a higher proportion of minority residents than outside Chicago so it probably makes more sense to get more shots in arms to older underserved communities before opening it up to everybody.

100% this. We are fully booked everyday. Nobody ever misses an appointment. We have wasted zero doses. When spots open up, they are snatched up within minutes. And we get literally hundreds of phone calls daily from eligible people trying to get the vaccine.

The same is not true in central Illinois and a lot of states that have opened up sooner.

The Walgreens’ in MS have just put it out there that anyone 16 and over who wants it can just show up without an appointment now. We’ve already got over a million vaccinated, which is surprising for a red state with not even 3 million people.

MS is also bottom 5 in terms of doses doses administered / doses distributed to state.

Which is why anyone can just walk up and get it now; we’ve basically run out of people willing to take it.
